Final Fantasy 7 Remake 3 Uses Unreal Engine 4, As Director Says Its Familiarity is “More Beneficial”

With a growing number of games being made in Unreal Engine 5, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will continue to use Unreal Engine 4. Director Naoki Hamaguchi told GameSpot they considered using the newer engine, but ultimately decided to stick with what has been successful for the final installment.

So, we’re building our game in Unreal Engine 4, but it’s not exactly ‘out of the box.’ We’ve really tweaked and modified it to work perfectly for what we’re trying to do. Honestly, it just makes more sense to stick with something we already know inside and out and have customized to fit our vision.

Although the game is generally well-received, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has faced some performance problems. Its large open areas caused issues with how smoothly the game ran and its visual quality on the PlayStation 5, prompting Square Enix to release updates. These optimization problems reappeared when the game was released on PC.

Although the iconic airship Highwind from the original game will play a significant role in Part 3, it’s unclear if the game world will be designed the same way as Rebirth. Hamaguchi has confirmed the sequel won’t have less side content than the previous game, but this statement specifically referred to the amount of optional things to do.

Even though the team is also developing a version for the next Nintendo Switch, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 might run more smoothly. We’ll have to wait and see, and Hamaguchi’s team still needs to finish the port of Rebirth, which is coming out this year. Keep an eye out for more news, as we might learn more about the final game in the coming months now that its official title is set.
