Final Fantasy 7 Remake Dev Explains Why It’s Not Upgrading to Unreal Engine 5 for Third Chapter

It’s interesting how upfront Square Enix is being about the last part of their Final Fantasy 7 Remake series.

We’ve learned the game’s title, and it will be created with Unreal Engine 4, just like previous games in the series.

Recently, there’s been talk about Square Enix potentially upgrading the game’s engine to Unreal Engine 5, and director Naoki Hamaguchi has now confirmed they are seriously looking into it.

In a recent interview with Gamespot, the developer confirmed the next game will be made using a customized version of Unreal Engine 4.

He explained:

We’re currently working with Unreal Engine 4, but we’ve significantly altered it to better suit our project. Because we’re so familiar with these changes and they’re already tailored to what we need, it’s more efficient to continue building on this existing foundation.

Even though the older engine has been replaced, Square Enix has likely made so many changes to the code over time that rebuilding it from scratch wouldn’t be practical.

Honestly, since the third game might be out as soon as 2027, it just makes sense for the developers to keep using the same tools they’re already comfortable with. It’ll save time and effort, you know?
