With development on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 underway, director Naoki Hamaguchi has shared some insights about the three-part series as a whole. In a recent YouTube interview with Julien Chièze, Hamaguchi explained that he envisioned the trilogy format as a way to offer players a variety of different gameplay experiences.
Hamaguchi explained to GamesRadar that he didn’t initially plan for each installment in the series to feel the same. He believes the third part needs to be fresh and bigger in scope to be successful, and a key element of that evolution will be something called ‘Highwind’.
Hamaguchi shared that the third game in the series is now aligning with his original vision. He’s eager for players to experience it, but says they still need time to complete development. He promised to share more details soon and asked for a little more patience.
During the same interview, Hamaguchi also talked about many different topics. He mentioned a debate within the development team while creating Final Fantasy 7 Remake – they considered making Cloud Strife’s famous Buster Sword smaller and more realistic.
Hamaguchi explained that during the development of the Remake, they worried about how Cloud’s Buster Sword felt too light. The way he swung it with one hand didn’t seem believable, so the team considered making the sword feel heavier and more realistic.
The development team ultimately decided to keep the Buster Sword as it was, recognizing its iconic status in Final Fantasy 7. Hamaguchi also explained they worried fans wouldn’t accept a redesign, particularly if the current, distinctive sword was replaced with a more ordinary, smaller one.
He explained that the sword was too well-known to simply be made ordinary, and players wouldn’t have accepted that. Ultimately, they stayed true to the original design, and it resonated with a new audience, which he believes was the correct decision.
As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear that work on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is actually pretty far along! Apparently, they’ve even started talking about what to call it. Hamaguchi said he and Tetsuya Nomura have been brainstorming names and have it down to two strong contenders. They’re aiming to have the final title decided by the end of the year, which is awesome!
Hamaguchi stated in the interview that he and Tetsuya Nomura have chosen two potential options and will make a final decision within the year. The project’s direction will be finalized before the end of the year.
While we’re still waiting for news on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, you can now find out more about Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade coming to the Switch 2 on January 22, 2026.
Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, explained that he never planned for each of the three games to be a similar experience. He shared insights into the current development of Part 3, emphasizing his vision wasn’t to simply repeat a formula.
