The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is fast becoming one of my all-time favorite gaming experiences, and the individual games within it are quickly joining my list of favorites. Rebirth especially was incredibly moving – it made me laugh and cry, and the world is so vibrant and full of life that I completely fell in love with it. Regardless of what anyone thinks about Square Enix expanding the original story, Remake and Rebirth are truly exceptional JRPGs.
Despite my excitement for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, I do have some concerns. The way the game is structured as a trilogy creates a significant, unavoidable problem that could jeopardize the future of the series. While I’m confident Part 3 will solidify this as a truly legendary JRPG series, it will face unique challenges that the first two games didn’t, and that’s a little worrying.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Will Be The Least Accessible Entry

It probably seems obvious, but you really need to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth before jumping into Part 3 – it won’t make much sense otherwise. While Rebirth tried to be a little more welcoming to new players, even that was a stretch. There’s no way the studio can make Part 3 understandable for anyone who hasn’t followed the story so far, meaning it’s designed only for those already familiar with the first two games.
It might seem obvious, but this is a real issue for Square Enix. While sequels often build on previous games, and players are used to needing some background knowledge, it’s becoming less acceptable. Games take so long to develop now that expecting even dedicated fans to remember every detail of the last installment is unreasonable. With Part 3 relying heavily on past games, Square Enix risks alienating many potential players and losing out on significant revenue.
The previous game, Rebirth, was pretty controversial when it came out. Many players criticized its new gameplay features, world, and story. While some, like me, really enjoyed it, others who preferred the original game were disappointed, and some just didn’t find it appealing. This means fewer people are likely to buy Part 3 compared to Rebirth, which Square Enix has already said didn’t sell as well as they hoped.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3’s Failure Could Be The End Of FF Remakes

Okay, so I’m starting to think Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 might not sell super well, and honestly, it’s kind of expected. Yeah, Square Enix is bringing Remake and Rebirth to the new Switch 2, which will definitely get some hype, but I don’t think that’ll be enough to make up for players who’ve lost interest, aren’t into the third game, or are just jumping in now and won’t get the full story. That’s how trilogies often go. But with FF7, it’s especially tough because Part 3 is going to be incredibly expensive to make, even though it probably won’t bring in as much money as the first two.
The game Rebirth cost about $150 million to make, and having it exclusively on PlayStation helped cover some of those costs. Now, with Square Enix releasing games on multiple platforms and focusing on big-budget titles, Part 3 won’t have that same financial advantage. Finishing the Remake trilogy is still very expensive. While I’m happy Square Enix is completing the trilogy, it’s hard to see it being as profitable as they’d like, given how high their expectations are for quality.
If the third installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy doesn’t perform well, Square Enix might have to drastically change its approach to game development, and the long-awaited Final Fantasy 9 Remake could be cancelled. They already cancelled $140 million worth of projects after the second game, Rebirth, underperformed. Given that interest in the trilogy has been surprisingly low overall, it’s unlikely the third game can attract enough new fans, and there are no other platforms to release the first two games on. While Rebirth had some success, and the third game will likely follow a similar path, the entire trilogy is expected to be considered a commercial disappointment, and Square Enix probably won’t attempt a project of this scale again anytime soon.
