Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy Director Says Games Being Turn-Based or Not Depends on Each Director

Despite the recent success of *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* showing there’s still an audience for classic turn-based RPGs, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* trilogy, doesn’t believe it will significantly change Square Enix’s plans for future *Final Fantasy* games. In an interview with The Gamer, Hamaguchi addressed the game’s success and whether it might inspire Square Enix to return to the turn-based combat system that defined earlier *Final Fantasy* titles.

Hamaguchi responded to the question, explaining that both *FF7 Remake* and *FF16* feature action-based RPG gameplay. He clarified that for the main *Final Fantasy* games, the overall design is ultimately decided by the game’s director, and whether the new title will be action-oriented or turn-based hasn’t been decided yet.

Okay, so people keep asking if my next game will be an RPG, and honestly, yeah, it’s a strong possibility. But will it be one of those turn-based RPGs? Well, we got a lot of love for *Expedition 33*, and people were saying JRPGs were making a comeback, which is cool. But what I’m really focused on is figuring out what kind of experience my fans will actually *enjoy*. That’s the biggest thing for me.

As a big fan, it sounds like Hamaguchi isn’t really stressing over whether his next game will be turn-based or action-packed. He’s saying it could honestly go either way! What he *really* cares about is figuring out what we, the fans, actually want to play. That’s awesome to hear, honestly – he wants to make a game *we’ll* love.

I recently heard Hamaguchi talk about the third part of the *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* series, and it was really interesting! He explained that they decided to split the original game into three parts for the remake because they didn’t want to leave anything out. They wanted to include everything from the original, and that meant expanding it into a trilogy!

Hamaguchi explained that the team decided to divide the remake of *Final Fantasy 7* into three games because of the passionate fanbase. They felt they couldn’t shorten the story without disappointing longtime fans. To fully utilize new technology and do justice to the original game’s narrative, a single game simply wouldn’t be enough.

He assured fans that the trilogy’s conclusion will please both those new to the story through the *Remake* trilogy and those who have enjoyed *Final Fantasy 7* for years. Hamaguchi is confident the completed trilogy will be universally loved.

As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear that the director already knows how *Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3* will end! He seems really confident that the ending will satisfy both longtime fans of the original *Final Fantasy 7* and those of us who discovered the story through the *Remake* series. Honestly, it sounds like he’s aiming for something everyone will love, and that makes me so hyped for the game!

On January 22, 2026, *Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade* will be available on Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix also announced that the entire *Remake* trilogy will eventually be released on all platforms.
