The first two games in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy have received a lot of positive feedback for how they play, but director Naoki Hamaguchi isn’t certain the same combat system will be used in future games after the trilogy is finished. In an interview with Easy Allies, Hamaguchi discussed the combat and explained his wish to keep future projects feeling “fresh”.
When discussing the combat system in Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, Hamaguchi explained that the team chose to combine the original game’s ATB (Active Time Battle) system-which felt like turn-based combat-with more modern, real-time action. He pointed out that this decision was made to attract new players who might not enjoy traditional turn-based battles.
When discussing the development of the FF7 Remake trilogy, Hamaguchi explained that a key goal was to update the combat system from the original FF7 to appeal to today’s players. “We really wanted to preserve the original [Active Time Battle] system,” he said, “but also make it engaging for a modern audience. We explored many possibilities, and ultimately decided that the best approach was to blend action-based gameplay with the traditional ATB elements. This combination, we felt, would make the battle system interesting and enjoyable for players now.”
Hamaguchi isn’t certain if we’ll see more of the current combat system – or any changes to it – in future games. However, he mentioned that whatever he works on next will probably feature a completely new combat system. It’s a fresh start each time! He likes to experiment!
He stated, “I’m not sure what my next project will be after FF7 Remake, but I don’t plan on using the same battle system again.” He continued, “We aim to keep things fresh and unexpected for players. However, I could potentially build upon the FF7 Remake battle system, evolving it into something new. It’s a possibility, but I won’t be using the exact same setup.”
With the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S approaching on January 22, 2026, Hamaguchi has revealed that the team is also developing a port for the next installment – Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Recently, he also mentioned that the third game in the series is still being made, and reassured fans that the initial two games did very well in sales. He stated, “FFVII Rebirth, the second game, is performing strongly on both PS5 and PC.” He added, “I understand some fans are worried, but you can be confident that we will release a third game that is high-quality and meets expectations.”
