Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, has shared that games focused on storytelling, such as The Last of Us and God of War, heavily influenced how the Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s story is told. He discussed these inspirations in a recent interview, which is available to watch below.
So, I heard through a translator that the team working on Final Fantasy 7 Remake really focused on story, and they looked at other single-player PlayStation games with strong narratives for ideas. But get this – with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second game in the trilogy, they switched gears and took a lot of inspiration from open-world games this time around!
When we were working on Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we really focused on telling a strong story. I was personally inspired by other games that did that really well, like God of War and The Last of Us. They showed me how to build a narrative that really pulls you in, and that’s what we aimed for with Remake.
He explained that the next game, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, will feature a much more open world. He drew inspiration from open-world games like The Witcher 3 when designing it.
Hamaguchi also offered advice to new players of the Final Fantasy series who are starting with Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. He playfully said that instead of explaining the complex details of the game’s world and what to expect, he’d rather players simply jump in and enjoy themselves.
I could explain Midgar and the game in detail, but I’ll keep it brief. A lot of fans tell me they wish they could forget the original Final Fantasy 7 story and experience the remakes as if it were their first time, without knowing anything beforehand.
Final Fantasy 7 is a truly iconic and legendary game. It’s had such a huge impact on gaming and its history that any fan of video games really should experience it – you’re missing out if you haven’t played it!
So, I just heard from the team working on Final Fantasy 7 Remake – they’re getting ready to launch it on the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on January 22, 2026, which is awesome! But that’s not all – they’re also making the third game in the trilogy. At the Brasil Game Show 2025, the lead guy, Hamaguchi, said they’re aiming to make the ending really satisfying for both longtime fans of the original Final Fantasy 7 and people like me who started playing with the Remake. He even talked about why they decided to split the story into three games instead of just doing one big RPG like they did back in 1997.
