Final Fantasy Game From PS1 Era Gets Fully Remastered With New Story & Gameplay

Square Enix experienced its most successful period during the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 generations. These consoles were home to some of the greatest Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) ever made, including Final Fantasy VII, a game that fundamentally reshaped how people thought about the genre. These titles were celebrated for their captivating gameplay, immersive stories, memorable music, and innovative technology. Square Enix has many games that fit this description, and several of these RPGs have been updated with rereleases and remakes. Now, one of the most anticipated titles is finally receiving a remaster on September 30th. This is a welcome return for a classic RPG, and a great opportunity for new players to understand why it’s so highly regarded.

Final Fantasy Tactics originally launched in the US for the PlayStation back in 1998. It’s since become a highly-regarded strategy RPG and remains one of my personal favorite game stories. The events of The Lion War introduced some truly memorable characters from Square Enix, and I’m really excited to experience the game again with the new remake, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles.

The Legacy of Final Fantasy Tactics on PS1

Final Fantasy Tactics stood out from the rest of the Final Fantasy games. Most titles in the series featured a small group of heroes, turn-based combat, and stories that took place across the world. However, Square Enix tried something new with this installment. Final Fantasy Tactics immersed players in the world of Ivalice and offered a complex, strategic gameplay experience. Players didn’t control a few adventurers; instead, they led entire armies on battlefields divided into squares. Careful planning of every move and attack was more important than ever to achieve success.

What truly made Final Fantasy Tactics special for me, and for many others, wasn’t just how it played. The story was packed with political schemes, acts of treachery, and a nuanced sense of morality that felt remarkably advanced for its time. I still remember Ramza Beoulve’s story and the way the world of Ivalice fell into corruption. It was a world where things weren’t clear-cut – the lines between good and evil blurred, and characters were forced to make incredibly difficult decisions.

Square Enix made the game even better with tough challenges, a complex character class system, and a story that changes based on your choices. For me, and many others, Final Fantasy Tactics remains a favorite in the series, and a big reason why people have been hoping for a remake. Now, after almost 30 years, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles will let players experience it again.

Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles – A True Remaster

The eagerly awaited remaster is coming out on September 30th. Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles isn’t just getting a visual makeover; it’s a complete overhaul designed to bring this tactical gem to today’s players with improved gameplay and added features for a better experience. Perhaps the most exciting part is that new story content will be added, building upon the original’s story.

The most immediately striking change is the visual update. This isn’t just about making battles look better; it extends to the user interface, level details, menus, and everything else. These improvements refresh the game while staying true to its original style, and also ensure it runs smoothly on today’s computers and consoles. The famous character designs by Akihiko Yoshida appear more beautiful than ever with a painterly style, and they stand out from other HD-2D games such as Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, and the forthcoming The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales.

The gameplay has been improved in several ways, particularly the combat system. This remaster from Square Enix features a quicker pace and provides more on-screen information. Players will now be able to see things like turn order and unit height, helping them to refine their strategies and make smarter choices. However, the fundamental gameplay that made Final Fantasy Tactics so beloved has stayed the same.

Final Fantasy Tactics and the Path Forward

The launch of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles isn’t simply a revival of a fan favorite; it could signal a fresh direction for the Final Fantasy series, potentially bringing Square Enix back to turn-based gameplay permanently. Although many Final Fantasy titles exist, Tactics has often been considered a side story and has only seen a limited number of follow-ups. How well the remaster is received might encourage the development of more games in this style, perhaps even a true sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics or Triangle Strategy.

Furthermore, Square Enix might also remake other classic games. The often-overlooked Vagrant Story includes hidden connections to Final Fantasy Tactics, and Final Fantasy XII shares the same universe. Both games could be updated and re-released because of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles. Alternatively, the Ivalice saga could be expanded with a brand-new installment. Or, Square Enix could simply remaster one of Final Fantasy Tactics’s current sequels.

As a huge fan, I’m so excited this remaster is finally here! It’s a chance for all of us to revisit a truly amazing tactical game. Those who’ve played it before will love the stunning new features, and new players will finally understand why everyone raves about Final Fantasy Tactics. Even before the remaster was announced, people were still talking about Final Fantasy Tactics – it’s a classic! September 30th could be a huge moment for the game and for Square Enix, and I really hope Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles gets all the appreciation it deserves.
