Final Fantasy IX character designer Toshiyuki Itahana leaves Square Enix

Toshiyuki Itahana, known for his character designs on games like Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, and the Chocobo series, has left Square Enix to pursue freelance work, he recently announced.

Here is the full message from Itahana on his departure:

I decided to leave Square Enix at the end of last year as I started planning for a long-term future with my art.

Last year was a big one for me as a Final Fantasy fan – it was the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX! I was honestly so happy to see so many other people celebrating it too. It’s a really special game, and it meant a lot to see all the love.

Thank you to everyone who joined in the celebrations and visited our exhibitions, shops, and cafes! (Just a reminder that the Osaka café is still open!)

Now that the artwork and oversight for the 25th anniversary project are finished, I’m proud of the work I did. It feels like the perfect time to move on to new opportunities and challenges.

From here on, I will be working as a freelance illustrator and character designer.

I’m thankful for the relationships I’ve built through my art, and I’m excited to use what I’ve learned to create even more diverse and interesting pieces.

I’m still developing as an illustrator, taking advice and learning from experienced freelancers. If you see my work anywhere, I’d really appreciate your support!

To the players of the Square Enix games I helped create, and to all my wonderful colleagues, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I truly appreciate your support and hope it continues.

May this new year be an exceptionally happy one for all of you.
