Final Fantasy X Was the ‘Ultimate Perfection’ of the Series, Says Dragon Quest Creator

Everyone has a different favorite Final Fantasy game, and it’s fascinating to learn what Yuji Horii – a highly respected game developer known for Dragon Quest – thinks about the series.

Back in the 80s and 90s, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy were major rivals, both competing to be the most popular role-playing game.

This happened before Square and Enix joined together to create Square Enix, bringing two of the biggest role-playing game companies under one publisher.

Interestingly, Horii wasn’t worried about Final Fantasy competing with Dragon Quest. He told Game Informer that he was simply keeping an eye on it, as any competitor should be monitored.

He continues:

One major difference I noticed was how the characters in Final Fantasy games talk a lot. In contrast, Dragon Quest focuses on letting you become the hero – the game is designed around the player experiencing the story as the main character.

In Final Fantasy games, you mostly watch the main character’s story unfold, rather than truly being that character. That felt like a big difference compared to Dragon Quest, though at the time, I didn’t think of them as competing with each other.

That’s an interesting point, and it seems Horii really enjoyed how the Final Fantasy series developed over time.

I was so excited when Final Fantasy X came out on the PS2! It really felt like a huge leap forward for the series, and the game itself is just incredible. He totally agrees, and he’s really praising it – he thinks it’s fantastic, and honestly, I do too!

You know, I’m a big Final Fantasy fan. And when I first played Final Fantasy X, I honestly thought it was the peak of the series – like, they couldn’t possibly top it. It just felt perfect to me.

Many consider Dragon Quest 8 to be as groundbreaking as Final Fantasy X, another classic PlayStation 2 game. Looking back, that era was truly a peak period for Japanese role-playing games.

Horii’s thoughts have made us think back to the past, but do you remember being as captivated by Final Fantasy X? Feel free to share your own rating on our Best Final Fantasy Games list, and let us know what you think in the comments below.
