Final Formation launches October 30 for Switch, in 2026 for PC

The side-scrolling shooter Final Formation is coming to Nintendo Switch on October 30th. It will be released for PC via Steam in 2026, according to publisher City Connection and developer Happymeal.

Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:

About

A new evolution of transformable science-fiction action shooting.

Okay, so it’s the year 3005, and things have really changed. Remember those alien creatures, the ‘Gene Beasts,’ that were causing trouble? Well, after years of fighting humans, they didn’t just die out – they evolved. Now they’re these super-advanced, robotic things called ‘Termination Bots,’ and honestly, they’re way more dangerous than before. It’s a pretty wild situation!

To combat this emerging danger, the Earth Allied Forces are sending EX-PELL, powerful transforming and combining robots, into battle.

Team up with PELL, a powerful, self-operating battle unit with advanced AI, and fight against the relentless Termination Bots!

“Free Map” for Strategic Exploration Across Vast Battlefields

Each level is an open, side-scrolling area where players can decide how they want to move through it and what strategies to use.

Encounter enemy ambushes, resupply and defend scattered bases, and take on a variety of missions.

Dash through diverse terrain—land, air, and sea—and complete your objectives with precision.

Adapt to the Battlefield with the “PELL Chain System”

  1. EX Fighter Mode – The player’s base form: a high-speed fighter aircraft. In addition to rapid-fire shots, it can unleash a powerful charged attack called “Big Bang.”
  2. Armed Unit “PELL” – Autonomous combat units stationed at various bases. Equipped with SUPER AI, they operate independently and can merge with the EX Fighter when approached
  3. Fusion Form with PELL – Merging EX Fighter with a PELL unit transforms it into a humanoid robot. The form and performance vary depending on the PELL unit used. This form supports multi-directional shooting, angled Big Bang shots, and powerful “PELL Shots” unique to each unit (limited use per mission).
  4. Tactical Flexibility via Separation and Recombination – Except in certain scenarios, you can freely separate from the fusion form and return to EX Fighter mode. Withstand enemy barrages in fusion mode, and utilize high mobility in fighter mode. Master the art of combining and separating on demand to dominate with hit-and-run tactics.

Feature-Rich Options to Enhance Gameplay

  • Language Support – Supports both Japanese and English. Switching to English also changes in-game comic demos to English text.
  • Volume Controls – Individually adjust the volume of BGM, sound effects, and overall master volume.

What Is Formation Z?

I first played Formation Z way back when it hit arcades in ’84, and it’s still a cool shooter. What makes it special is you pilot a mech that can actually transform – pretty neat for that time!

Players control a robot that can change into a jet mid-air, creating a fast and exciting experience. The game was very popular and released on many different home consoles, making it one of Jaleco’s most well-known creations.

Okay, so this new game is basically the sequel to Formation Z, but they’re calling it Final. It’s like they took everything from the first game and completely rebuilt it with a new story and a different way of looking at the world. It feels really fresh, honestly!

Experience the excitement all over again! This game, created with collaboration between City Connection and Happy Meal, boasts a captivating story from manga artist U-Watari, and now features improved gameplay and graphics.
