‘Firefly’ Season 2 Can Thrive Where Hulu’s Canceled ‘Buffy’ Revival Failed

Ever since the announcement of a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, fans have felt a mix of excitement and worry. Those concerns eased when Sarah Michelle Gellar agreed to return, and acclaimed director Chloé Zhao signed on to direct the pilot episode. With even Dolly Parton involved as a producer, it seemed like everything was falling into place. As the cast was revealed and filming began, most people believed the Buffy sequel was guaranteed – making Hulu’s recent decision to cancel the project all the more surprising.

Interestingly, around the same time plans for a Buffy reboot were cancelled, a new Firefly series began to develop. Nathan Fillion hinted at a big announcement, which turned out to be a continuation of Firefly – but as an animated show. As you might expect, fans were thrilled, as they’ve been asking for more of the sci-fi series for 24 years. While Firefly continued through the 2005 film Serenity and comic books, fans have always hoped to see the original cast back on screen. Now, that possibility seems likely, though there’s always a risk it could be cancelled like Buffy. However, Firefly has one key difference – its animated format – which might help it avoid the same fate.

The ‘Buffy’ Revival Series Is Officially Dead, and It’s Probably for the Best

A planned continuation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, would have featured Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role as Buffy in a smaller capacity, acting as a mentor. The show was set years after the original series ended, with Buffy having retired from slaying and living under her alias, Anne Summers, while working at an insurance company. This new series would have been a direct sequel to the 1997 show, maintaining its established story. The focus would have shifted to a new slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who is known for her roles in The Lowdown and Skeleton Crew. The show’s setting, also called New Sunnydale, would have been a town built on the ruins of the original Sunnydale, once again becoming a hotspot for supernatural activity. According to an IMDb synopsis:

Nova, a sixteen-year-old who loves to read, finds out she’s destined to fight vampires in the town of Sunnydale, which has been rebuilt and is now divided into two very different areas. During a festival called Vampire Weekend – meant to acknowledge the town’s spooky history – two vampires named Jack and Shirley appear and start causing trouble. They kill a teenager and begin planning a dangerous ceremony to create a massive vampire force at a place called the Cursed Circle.

Like many shows that revisit older stories, Buffy would aim to satisfy longtime fans while also introducing fresh characters and storylines. Cobra Kai recently proved how well this can work, successfully blending familiar elements with new narratives. The 2022 Scream revival and Scream VI also did a good job of building on the original while staying true to its roots. A continuation of Buffy in this style isn’t a bad idea, but it does mean fans will have certain expectations.

Fans would love to see Sarah Michelle Gellar reprise her role as Buffy, ideally as a regular character who mentors the new lead, Nova, similar to how Giles did in the original series. However, reports from the pilot episode suggest Gellar only made a very brief appearance at the end. This could be a hint that she’ll return later, but it also suggests she might only be a minor character, or simply referenced to create the illusion of a larger role. Gellar’s involvement might have been mainly to appeal to fans’ nostalgia, as the new show was already planned as a way to pass the torch to a new generation.

Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on social media that the planned Buffy revival was officially canceled by Hulu on March 14th. Since then, the first draft of the script for Buffy: New Sunnydale appeared online, and fans have had mixed reactions. Gellar has asked people not to read it. According to Deadline, sources say that the showrunner, Zhao, didn’t quite match the show’s intended style and feel. Gellar also revealed that the cancellation came down to a decision made by one executive.

We interviewed an executive who openly disliked the original show and repeatedly pointed out that he hadn’t even finished watching it, and didn’t think it was to his taste.

‘Firefly’s Return Is Making All the Right Moves To Thrive In ‘Buffy’s Absence

I’m so excited to hear that Firefly is coming back! It’s going to be an animated series, and even better, most of the original cast is returning. It’s sad that Ron Glass, who played Shepard Book, passed away, so they’ll be recasting his role, but it’s great they’re finding a way to include him. From what I understand, this isn’t just a one-off; they’re hoping it’ll continue the story beyond the original run and the movie Serenity. The new series will be set between the end of the show and the movie, which is a time period some comics have touched on, but now we’ll get a whole lot more stories from that era. I can’t wait!

Unlike the recent approach with Buffy, the new Firefly won’t be a continuation set years later. Based on what the actors have said, it will pick up directly where the original series left off, continuing existing storylines and focusing on familiar characters. If the show had been live-action, a time jump would have been almost necessary due to the 24-year gap since it first aired. But because it’s animated, the original cast can reprise their roles without addressing how much time has passed.

What stands out about the new Firefly series is how much the creators are listening to what fans actually want. Buffy tried to attract a new, younger audience by leveraging Sarah Gellar’s popularity and the show’s existing cultural impact. However, while a revival was planned, many fans really wanted to see Gellar take on a leading role again. Firefly isn’t relying on the original cast simply to pass the torch to a new generation, and it’s not jumping far ahead in time either. Instead, after 24 years of requests, the team is genuinely trying to give fans the second season they’ve been waiting for.

Animated shows often attract a different audience than live-action series, so the new Firefly revival could face some unique hurdles. However, Firefly already has a dedicated and growing fanbase that loves the characters and the show’s universe, as shown by the comics and board game. The cancellation of Buffy: New Sunnydale surprised many, but it also seemed to be taking the wrong approach to bringing the character back to television. Firefly appears to be well-prepared for success, currently looking for a network to air it. This gives it a stronger start than the Buffy revival, suggesting Firefly has a good chance of succeeding where the previous attempt faltered.
