Happy New Year, movie lovers! The next year looks fantastic for films, with exciting releases like Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Project Hail Mary and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 3 on the way. However, we’ll have to wait a bit for them to arrive. As we start the year, there haven’t been any major new movie releases yet, so the box office news is currently focused on successful films from last year.
Even though 2024 is ending, several films continue to perform well in theaters worldwide. This weekend, both James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire And Ash and Paul Feig’s The Housemaid boosted their global box office earnings. See the complete Top 10 list below, and then read on for a closer look at the numbers.

Avatar: Fire And Ash Crosses $1 Billion At The Worldwide Box Office
Will Avatar: Fire and Ash reach the $2 billion mark at the global box office, like a select few other films have? It’s too early to say for sure. But starting 2026 on a high note, Avatar 3 has officially joined the ranks of films earning over $1 billion worldwide – becoming the 59th movie to achieve that milestone.
While James Cameron’s new sci-fi film is performing exceptionally well, it still needs to gain ground to become the highest-grossing movie of 2025. Currently, it trails behind the successes of Zootopia 2 ($1.588 billion) and Ne Zha 2 ($2.001 billion). However, the film topped the domestic box office charts again this weekend, earning an additional $40 million. Including international earnings over the past three days, the movie has now grossed $1.083 billion worldwide, according to The Numbers.
So far, Avatar: Fire And Ash has earned $306 million in the US and Canada. While it’s doing well, it’s slightly behind the first two Avatar movies in terms of initial earnings. The original Avatar made $352.1 million and Avatar: The Way of Water reached $425.7 million by their 17th day in theaters. Ultimately, the first Avatar movie earned more overall ($785.2 million) than The Way of Water ($688.8 million) in the region, and analysts are now watching to see how Fire And Ash performs over its entire run.
Currently, the movie ranks fifth among the biggest releases planned for 2025 in the domestic market. It trails behind James Gunn’s Superman, which earned $354.2 million in theaters. Zootopia 2 is in third place with $363.6 million and continues to gain momentum, while A Minecraft Movie ($423.9 million) and Lilo & Stitch ($423.8 million), directed by Jared Hess and Dean Fleischer-Camp respectively, hold the top two spots.

As I’ve mentioned in my recent box office reports, the majority of the revenue for the Avatar films actually comes from international markets. So far, ticket sales for Avatar: Fire And Ash in the U.S. and Canada make up less than 30
The three Avatar movies have collectively earned $6.35 billion at the box office, easily justifying their high production costs. These films are clearly very popular, and audiences are already eagerly awaiting the next installments – Avatar 4 in 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031 – which are confirmed release dates.
After A Modest Domestic Start, The Housemaid Hits $100 Million Globally
Let’s talk box office. While Avatar: Fire And Ash is dominating everything right now, it’s easy to forget that late December releases can really launch a film. Everyone’s focused on Avatar 3 potentially hitting that $1 billion mark – and with a $350 million budget, it should – but I’m more impressed by The Housemaid. It only cost around $35 million to make, and it just crossed $100 million globally. That’s a huge win, and a fantastic example of how a smaller budget doesn’t necessarily mean smaller success.
I’ve been following The Housemaid movie, which is based on Freida McFadden’s popular book, and it’s had a bit of a rollercoaster ride in theaters. It started out okay, debuting in third place, then dropped to fourth. But it’s bounced back to third now, which is great! What’s really interesting is that it’s consistently earning around the same amount each week – about $19 million, then $15.3 million, and now almost $20 million domestically. It’s cool to see it holding steady!
The film has already earned $75.7 million in the US and Canada, and $57.3 million internationally, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $133 million. It’s currently ranked 26th among 2025 domestic releases, exceeding the $73.2 million grossed by Tron: Ares. With a relatively open release schedule in January 2026, it’s expected to potentially climb into the top 20 highest-grossing films of the year.
This Friday marks the start of new wide releases for 2026, with two films hitting theaters: the action thriller Greenland 2: Migration, starring Gerard Butler, and the horror film Primate, directed by Johannes Roberts. The big question is whether either of these new releases can challenge Avatar 3, which is currently number one at the box office. I’ll be following the results closely and will share a full report in my next column on TopMob in one week.
