
The Big Bang Theory has been a remarkably successful comedy, both during its original run and in reruns, since it first aired in September 2007. While the original show ended six years ago, its story continued with the prequel, Young Sheldon, which ran for five seasons and concluded in 2024. But the universe didn’t stop there! A spin-off of Young Sheldon, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, is already in its second season. Warner Bros. has also confirmed another spin-off is in the works, designed to appeal to fans who wanted to see the Big Bang Theory world updated to the present day.
Over the summer, it was announced that “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” would bring back several familiar faces. Kevin Sussman will reprise his role as Stuart, the comic book store owner who was in over eighty episodes of “The Big Bang Theory.” He’ll be joined by Lauren Lapkus as his girlfriend, Denise, and Brian Posehn as Bert Kibbler, both also regulars from the original series. Now, the first look at “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” has been revealed, and it presents a dramatically different style for the franchise.
Big Bang Theory Spinoff Looks Completely Different From the Original Show
HBO Max shared a new trailer today showcasing what’s coming in 2026. It features snippets from upcoming seasons of shows like House of the Dragon and the new DC series Lanterns, as well as a first look at Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. While the trailer only shows two quick scenes from the Stuart spinoff, they’re surprisingly different from what fans might expect. Unlike the bright, traditional sitcom style of The Big Bang Theory, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe seems to have a more modern look, with darker colors and a focus on creating depth in each shot. One shot shows Stuart standing in the famous Comic Center of Pasadena.

With over 270 episodes of The Big Bang Theory known for its bright, colorful look, it’s surprising that its new spinoff series is going for a much darker visual style. Unlike Young Sheldon and George & Mandy, which still feel bright and cheerful, the new show seems to have completely abandoned that aesthetic. This trend is immediately apparent – the second shot of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe features Brian Posehn returning to the franchise, tied up and appearing to be in serious danger.

The unique look of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe might actually be connected to the story. When the show was announced, the plot revealed that Stuart Bloom has to fix reality after damaging a device created by Sheldon and Leonard, which causes a multiverse-level disaster. We think it would be clever if the show changed its visual style to reflect this broken reality, visually distinguishing it from The Big Bang Theory by showing that it’s literally dealing with alternate universes.
Look, I’m still trying to figure out exactly what HBO Max is going for with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, but they’ve officially said we’ll see it in 2026. That’s good news, because honestly, I’m eager to see if this show delivers on its quirky promise. Hopefully, that 2026 release date is a sign they have a clear vision for the series.
