Netflix is boasting what many believe is their strongest fall movie lineup ever, and a standout title is “Train Dreams.” This American drama, directed and written by Clint Bentley, is based on Denis Johnson’s 2011 novella of the same name. Since its premiere at Sundance in January, the film has received widespread acclaim, and features a talented cast including Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon, William H. Macy, and Clifton Collins Jr.
“Train Dreams” takes place in the beautiful but harsh landscape of the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s. The film stars Edgerton as Robert Grainier, a logger who finds work helping to build a railroad across the growing nation. Though he loves working outdoors, the job keeps him separated from his wife, Gladys (Jones), and their young daughter. The story follows the life of this humble man as the world around him rapidly changes. The first trailer showcases a captivating and almost mesmerizing quality, both in how the film looks and how the story unfolds. It appears to be beautifully filmed, and the actors seem perfectly cast in this small but impressive story.
