First Look At 3 Harry Potter Remake Characters Revealed in Key Book Scene (With Some Notable Changes)

HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series is starting to come together, and we’ve now seen the first images of some key characters in their costumes. Production has been underway for a few months, and we’re learning more about the show—especially how it will compare to the original books and movies. Details include a longer, more detailed scene of the night Lord Voldemort killed Harry’s parents, Lily and James Potter, and a scene showing a meeting between Albus Dumbledore and Nicolas Flamel.

Recently revealed photos show a scene from the first Harry Potter movie, The Philosopher’s Stone: the flying lesson. Shared by Wizarding World Direct on X, the photos depict Madame Hooch (played by Louise Brealey) instructing Hogwarts students on how to fly with broomsticks, as seen below.

The photos offer a first glimpse of Neville Longbottom (played by Rory Wilmot) and Draco Malfoy (Lox Pratt), alongside Harry Potter (Dominic McLaughlin), who seems to be wearing his house robes. We also see Ron Weasley, although it looks like a stand-in was used instead of Alastair Stout.

This scene is famous among fans of the book and movie – it’s when Draco steals Neville’s memory ball and Harry gives chase. This moment is crucial because it solidifies Draco as a villain and highlights Harry’s kind nature. More importantly, it’s during this chase that Harry first shows off his flying ability, leading Professor McGonagall to recruit him as the new Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

The Flying Lessons Scene Is Another Good Sign For Harry Potter’s Remake

Initial glimpses of the flying lessons are promising because the instructor, Madam Hooch, has a unique look that differs from the films. She’s wearing a yellow outfit with green and brown accents – almost like a 90s tracksuit, though a bit more ordinary than you’d expect for someone in the wizarding world. In the movies, she simply wore plain black, just like the students.

Like Harry, Draco also has a unique robe color – though Harry will also wear the classic black one. These choices help the series develop a different visual style compared to the films, avoiding a simple copy of the original look. Draco’s hair is styled with waves, which is different from the slicked-back style Tom Felton made famous in the first movie.

How the new version portrays flying, especially the Quidditch matches, will be a major point of comparison to the original films. While the movie Quidditch games were visually impressive for their time, special effects technology has significantly improved since then. It will be fascinating to see how the remake updates these scenes and surpasses the previous effects.

We might see fewer on-location photos from now on, as filming is moving indoors to focus on Hogwarts. It’s great to get a glimpse of the work being done, and hopefully we’ll see official photos released soon. I think it’s a good idea for the TV series to be different from the movies and develop its own unique style, as long as it remains faithful to the original books. Seeing this kind of change is definitely a positive sign.

The Harry Potter remake is expected to be released on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.
