DC Studios recently revealed Bradley Cooper’s appearance in the new Superman movie. Cooper previously worked with director James Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy, voicing Rocket Raccoon. In Superman, Cooper played Jor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian father, appearing as a hologram alongside Angela Sarafyan as Superman’s mother, Lora Lor-Van. Through this hologram message, they revealed the surprising truth about why Superman was sent to Earth: not as a beacon of hope, but to ultimately conquer the world and carry on the Kryptonian lineage.
Framestore, the visual effects studio, recently released a detailed behind-the-scenes video explaining how they created the complex holographic message in Superman. The video not only showed how the scene was made, but also gave fans the clearest look yet at the costume Bradley Cooper will wear as part of the new DC Universe.

Despite ongoing fan theories that Superman’s parents’ message was a deception created by Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult) to damage Superman’s image, James Gunn has confirmed the message is genuinely from Jor-El, adding a new layer to the established DC Universe story.

This year, Supergirl will delve into the tragic fate of the civilization that sent the desperate message we received – a world similar to Krypton, complete with Kryptonians dressed in the same elegant white robes worn by Jor-El and Lara in Superman.

More than seven months after the movie Superman came out, dedicated fans of the DC Universe can now get a complete look at the simple, bright white costume worn by Superman.

Framestore confirmed that Cooper and Sarafyan filmed their scenes within a special 4D capture volume, using 192 cameras. James Gunn directed the holographic message remotely, and they were able to capture the entire two-minute scene with only a few takes.

This technology digitally reconstructs a scene, maintaining the original performance and lighting, which allows for what’s called “virtual reframing.” Essentially, it lets filmmakers change the camera angle after filming, without needing to reshoot anything.

When the Kryptonian message seemed damaged, Framestore went above and beyond, actually creating realistic glitches within the recording itself. They combined these with digitally created parts, allowing them to maintain the original lighting information.

Even though we only see Jor-El briefly in Superman, and the image is a bit unclear, it’s obvious the filmmakers put a lot of thought into his costume, creating a fresh, updated look. They also used impressive and unusual visual effects to make the hologram scenes stand out.

With Superman‘s theatrical run finished and its initial success now available on HBO Max, the story continues with Supergirl on June 26th. Fans can also look forward to the sequel to Man of Tomorrow, which is scheduled to release on July 9, 2027.

Will Bradley Cooper Return to the DCU?
Even though James Gunn has stated that the message from Jor-El was genuine, suggesting Kryptonians in the DCU aren’t as purely heroic as they’ve been shown before, many fans still suspect the message was altered.
This idea has some support, as a news ticker in a Superman story mentioned that Lex Luthor was responsible for the fake images of Superman’s parents’ message. However, this could simply be inaccurate reporting by a Metropolis news station trying to restore Superman’s heroic image and discredit Lex Luthor.
Viewers will find out more details in June about the upcoming Supergirl spin-off, which David Krumholtz says will delve deeper into the history of the House of El. Unfortunately, Bradley Cooper likely won’t reprise his role as Jor-El this year. The story will instead focus on Kara Zor-El’s family, specifically her parents, Zor-El (played by Krumholtz) and Alura In-Ze (played by Emily Beecham).
James Gunn might be able to include Superman’s parents in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film. Previous versions of the Fortress of Solitude included an AI of Jor-El that Kal-El could consult for guidance. However, given the shocking revelations about his parents, it’s hard to picture this new Superman seeking their advice.
