Fans were given an initial glimpse at a new DC villain movie being developed by James Gunn, who is co-CEO at DC Studios. Gunn’s upcoming slate, titled Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, is beginning to roll out, featuring villainous projects like the second season of Peacemaker. This pattern of showcasing villains as main characters looks set to continue in the coming years, with one such project already in its early stages of development.
The initial pictures for the upcoming DC Studios’ movie titled ‘Clayface’ have been made public online. Initially, ‘Clayface’ wasn’t part of Gunn’s long-term plans for DC, but it has now become a significant film in the early lineup of releases for the franchise. As of now, there are no photos featuring the film’s main cast, but sneak peeks hint at another impressive production by DC Studios on the big screen.
According to TomMCJL’s share, the first image features a white news van labeled “Gotham News 1” parked alongside a vintage Mercedes sedan in a Liverpool set designed for the film Clayface. This sneak peek suggests that Gotham City could play a significant role in the upcoming DC Universe movie, as Batman is expected to make his grand entrance into the franchise soon.
In another spot, I come across an antique Chevy Camaro that’s seen better days, with rust steadily accumulating on its hood. Sporting red flames along the hood and sides against a blue backdrop, this vintage car certainly turns heads.
In an adjacent scene, a Gotham City Police Department patrol car is captured up-close, revealing the police department’s distinctive logo to viewers. Since its founding as a city in 1820, Gotham will play a significant role in the future stories of the DC Universe.
At night, I witnessed another GCPD squad car being strategically positioned on set, ready for filming. As I later discovered through photographs, this had been done to replicate a real-life scenario.
In the latest series of photos, there appeared to be larger equipment being used, accompanied by additional police vehicles from the GCPD. One vehicle was even loaded onto what seemed like a lift, possibly situated atop a truck with multiple automobiles.
The recently unveiled photos signal the debut of DCU’s inaugural villain-focused film set for theater release. Scheduled as the third movie in the new DCU lineup, it will follow James Gunn’s Superman project slated for July 2025 and Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl movie due out in June 2026.
The images show the upcoming villain-centric film of the DC Universe, which is the third movie to be released as part of their new series. It will come after James Gunn’s Superman project in July 2025 and Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl movie in June 2026.
In simpler terms, the movie “Clayface” showcases an up-and-coming actor whose face gets disfigured by a criminal. Seeking assistance, he turns to a scientist before a tragic incident occurs. Directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan, the film features Tom Rhys Davies and Naomi Ackie in leading roles. “Clayface” is scheduled for a theater release on September 11, 2026.
When To Expect More From DC Studios’ Clayface
It seems that, with Clayface’s filming still in its early stages and only a few actors confirmed for DC Universe’s inaugural R-rated theater production, there’s a strong likelihood that details about this villain-focused movie will stay hidden for quite some time. Furthermore, eager fans are on edge to learn more about who else might join the cast to bring the Gotham city characters in the story to life.
In this upcoming film, Flanagan and Watkins will have an opportunity to showcase their creative talents unlike any previous work in the DC Universe. The movie could pave the way for more unique interpretations of iconic villains down the line, with the creators aiming to develop Matt Hagen’s story as a source of inspiration for future DC productions.
As the filming progresses until year-end, fans can expect to uncover additional information about various characters and storylines that will be featured, as well as insights into how these elements tie into the broader DC Universe and the evolving narrative of the Batman series.
Given all factors, Flanagan’s script for the DCU’s initial horror production has left Gunn quite impressed. It appears there are no boundaries as to the impact this character could have on the story.
