Okay, I’ve been waiting for this! We finally got our first glimpse of Jason Momoa as Lobo in the new DCU! It’s wild to think the guy who was Aquaman in the old DCEU is now heading to space as this totally different character. Apparently, Lobo is going to be a big deal, showing up in the Supergirl movie and basically being a key player in how James Gunn is rebuilding the whole DC universe.
The trailer for the new Supergirl series is out, and it gives fans their first glimpse of Jason Momoa as Lobo! He looks fantastic – incredibly true to the comic book character with pale skin, long black hair, and a rugged biker outfit. Momoa has long said Lobo is his dream role, and after seeing this, it’s hard to argue with him.
Look, as a critic, I’ve been following James Gunn’s vision for the new DCU closely, and his enthusiasm for Jason Momoa as Lobo is genuinely exciting. He’s gone on record saying Momoa was always his top pick, and it’s clear he has big plans for the character. What really struck me in his explanation is how Lobo isn’t just a cameo; he’s integral to shaping the narrative of the ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ story. Gunn essentially needed a way to connect all the smaller moments in the comic into a cohesive, three-act structure, and Lobo provides that. He clearly feels Lobo is a massively popular comic book character who’s been surprisingly absent from the big screen, and he’s thrilled to finally bring him to life.
Jason Momoa has wanted to play Lobo in a DC film for a long time. He actually believed Zack Snyder was considering him for the part in Batman v Superman. While he ultimately became Aquaman and made the character popular, Momoa still feels Lobo would have been a more suitable role for him.
‘Supergirl’ Takes the DCU Into the Depths of Space

Warner Bros.
The upcoming Supergirl movie will be the second major film released in the new DC Universe. Directed by Craig Gillespie, known for I, Tonya and Cruella, and written by Ana Nogueira, the film stars Milly Alcock (from House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. The cast also includes Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem, The Witcher) as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone, The Old Guard 2) as the villain Krem, David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) as Supergirl’s father, Zor-El, Emily Beecham (King & Conqueror) as Supergirl’s mother, Alura In-Ze, Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Dune) as Lobo, and David Corenswet as Superman. Supergirl’s dog, Krypto, will also appear.
I’m so excited for the Supergirl movie! The trailer made it clear they’re really sticking to the source material, specifically Tom King’s ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ storyline. It looks like Kara will be venturing out into space on a really powerful, personal quest for revenge. And the best part? It’s coming as part of the first wave of the DCU, and we’ll finally get to see it in theaters on June 26, 2026! I can’t wait!
