First Look at Legend of Zelda Movie Reveals Link & Zelda’s Live-Action Costumes (& They’re Perfect)

Nintendo is having a fantastic week! The biggest news is the first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, bringing back Mario, Peach, Bowser, Toad, and others. New characters are also joining the adventure, including Bowser Jr. voiced by Benny Safdie (known for Oppenheimer), and Princess Rosalina, played by Brie Larson, a Marvel star and big Nintendo fan. However, another Nintendo project is also generating a lot of excitement online.

The team making the new Legend of Zelda movie is currently filming in the forests of New Zealand, working to create the world of Hyrule. While shooting on location will likely make the movie feel more realistic, it’s also led to some early glimpses of the film appearing online. Fans are now getting their first looks at actors Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth dressed as Zelda and Link.

A recent video, shared by Twisted Voxel, shows Florence Pugh as Zelda wearing a costume similar to the one from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. She’s exploring the set before reuniting with her co-star, Dichen Lachman, who is known for her role in Severance. Nintendo hasn’t confirmed Lachman’s part in the movie, so her character is currently unknown. However, many believe she looks like Impa, Zelda’s protector, a character who appears in several of the Zelda video games.

Ainsworth is also in the video, dressed as Link with the character’s famous green outfit. While we don’t get a full look at the costume, it appears to be quite well-made, which isn’t surprising considering director Wes Ball has repeatedly expressed his dedication to faithfully adapting the original material.

The Legend of Zelda Is in Very Good Hands

A live-action Legend of Zelda movie has been discussed for a long time, but Nintendo didn’t want to move forward until after the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Finally, the director of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes joined the project and began reassuring fans that it would be a good adaptation.

In 2023, Ball expressed immense excitement about a future project, saying it felt like the culmination of his life’s work. He explained that he was a lifelong fan of The Legend of Zelda, believing it to be a largely unexplored and incredibly valuable franchise. He emphasized that the team wasn’t simply pursuing the project for the sake of it, but was dedicated to creating something truly exceptional.

Based on behind-the-scenes footage, it seems like Ball is keeping his promise. The production of The Legend of Zelda movie is aiming for a quality level similar to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and is determined to avoid the mistakes of the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film.

The Legend of Zelda hits theaters on May 7, 2027.
