Ryan Murphy is adding a new installment to his popular Monster series, this time exploring the lives of two famous female serial killers. One killer, in particular, has already been the subject of numerous documentaries and a 2003 film starring Charlize Theron, making her story a natural fit for Murphy’s unique approach.
Even though the latest season of the show received poor reviews (with only a 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and some viewers criticized certain creative decisions—like portraying a romantic connection between the killer and his victims—it’s still a hit on Netflix, largely thanks to the popular storyline about Ed Gein. Now, Sarah Paulson will star in season four, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, playing Aileen Wuornos, a woman known for her incredibly difficult life. It’s unclear why Aileen Wuornos is being featured in a story about Lizzie Borden, who lived in the 19th century, but the show is moving forward with this unusual pairing.
There Are More Questions Than Answers At This Point
Sarah Paulson appears to have convincingly transformed into Aileen Wuornos for an upcoming role. Paparazzi photos taken on December 17th show the actress on set in Los Angeles, fully in character. She was wearing sweatpants and a maroon robe, along with a light brown wig and bleached eyebrows. In an interview with Variety, Paulson explained she’s drawn to understanding human motivation. She said she’s always interested in exploring societal perceptions and bringing her own perspective to complex characters – a fact that director Ryan Murphy is aware of.
She explained her approach to understanding characters, saying she prefers to start with a solid foundation of known facts—details that aren’t up for interpretation. Surprisingly, this actually gives her more creative freedom. She’s found that knowing the specifics allows her to fully immerse herself in the character’s world and experience things from their perspective.
I’m still not sure if Murphy has what it takes to really become this complicated character, but one thing’s for certain: Paulson absolutely nails the physical appearance. She looks the part, that’s for sure!
