A common understanding exists: The arrival of a fresh adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” warrants a joyous occasion.
Particularly, it was fortunate for fans to catch a sneak peek of the forthcoming Netflix mini-series adaptation of the 1813 novel by Jane Austen, given that filming has officially started.
In the first glimpses of the upcoming series, Emma Corrin and Olivia Colman, portraying Elizabeth Bennet and Mrs. Bennet, are captured strolling through verdant landscapes while elegantly dressed in period clothing from the Regency era.
The pair find themselves encircled by the rest of the Bennett sisters: Freya Mavor playing Jane, Hopey Parish portraying Mary, Rhea Norwood as Lydia, and Hollie Avery taking on the role of Kitty.
Missing from the first look was Jack Lowden, who is set to take on the iconic role of Mr. Darcy.
In this newest rendition of the beloved Regency novel, we have Rufus Sewell stepping into the role of Mr. Bennet, Louis Partridge portraying Mr. Wickham, Fiona Shaw taking on Lady Catherine de Bourg, Daryl McCormack as Mr. Bingley, and Jamie Demetriou cast as Mr. Collins.
Beyond playing the main character Elizabeth, Emma, aged 29, will additionally assume the role of executive producer for the upcoming series. Notably, this production is scheduled to be helmed by director Eros Lyn, who has previously worked on shows like “Heartstopper” and “Doctor Who”, and penned by acclaimed British author Dolly Alderton.
Emma expressed her excitement when she said, “Being given the chance to portray Elizabeth Bennet is a unique experience I’ll cherish forever.” She continued, “Working alongside Olivia and Jack, guided by Dolly’s exceptional scripts, feels like an immense privilege. I can hardly wait for a fresh audience to rediscover this story and fall in love with it once more.
Dolly felt equally proud to contribute to the adaptation, expressing to Netflix, “Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is the foundation for romantic comedies—it was a pleasure to revisit its pages in search of both familiar and innovative ways to breathe new life into this cherished novel.
Although a release date hasn’t been announced yet, this limited series consists of six captivating episodes and is set to provide an accurate portrayal of the cherished Jane Austen novel.
This new adaptation is just one of many interpretations of the book “Pride and Prejudice,” which has been previously adapted multiple times, most notably as a BBC miniseries featuring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth in 1995, and as a movie with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in 2005.
