Steven Spielberg is starting to promote his new science fiction film, which is set to come out in 2026. It’s his first sci-fi movie since 2018’s Ready Player One, and it’s based on an original story he came up with. The screenplay was written by David Koepp, a frequent collaborator of Spielberg’s, who also worked on films like Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds. The movie boasts a strong cast including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo, and the legendary John Williams is composing the music.
Not much is known about the plot yet, but the movie is shaping up to be a science fiction thriller involving UFOs. Initial promotional materials are keeping the story under wraps, adding to the overall sense of mystery. A billboard in Times Square, shared by @mediaforupdates on X, has been revealed, featuring an eye within the shape of a bird, surrounded by imagery suggestive of outer space.

The billboard hints at a big reveal, fitting the UFO and alien storyline, and also shows the movie’s release date: June 6th, 2026. Instead of sharing the movie’s title, the marketing campaign is relying on Steven Spielberg’s name to generate excitement. The title will likely be unveiled with the first trailer, and given this initial marketing push, that trailer could arrive soon – perhaps even before the release of Avatar: Fire & Ash.
Spielberg’s Return Is Great News For Sci-Fi Fans
As a lifelong Spielberg fan, I’ve been waiting a long time for him to return to science fiction – it’s been seven years since his last sci-fi film, and even longer – since War of the Worlds in 2005 – since he told an alien story. What’s really exciting about this new project is that it’s an original idea, not based on existing material. That makes me think it could really recapture the magic of his earlier classics like E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In fact, Close Encounters feels like a key inspiration here, especially if the new movie deals with UFOs, first contact, or even alien abductions – it feels like he’s going back to those roots.
I’m really excited for this movie, and it’s a good reminder that Steven Spielberg basically invented the summer blockbuster! It’s been ten years since he released a film during the summer – the last one was The BFG back in 2016 – and this one feels like a sure thing. Everything’s there for it to be huge, especially since the early marketing looks really promising. It’s tough for any director to guarantee an audience these days, with only a few like Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino still able to do it consistently, but a Spielberg sci-fi film should be a major event that gets people back to the movies. We’ll find out if it lives up to the hype in June, though!
Spielberg’s untitled Sci-Fi movie releases on June 6th, 2026.
