It’s high time we return to Camp Crystal Lake. The franchise is experiencing a revival with fresh content centered around Jason Voorhees in production, and kicking things off is Crystal Lake, an upcoming series on Peacock that will act as a prequel to the initial movie.
Earlier reports confirmed that Linda Cardellini has been chosen for the role of Pamela Voorhees, who was originally played by Betsy Palmer in the first “Friday the 13th” film. Recent set photos from “Crystal Lake,” shared on social media, provide a glimpse into the campground where it’s expected that Jason Voorhees will meet his end. This event would trigger Pamela Voorhees to carry out her vengeful rampage marked by bloodshed. One of these images offers a first look at Cardellini in costume as Mrs. Voorhees.
In this new take on the “Friday the 13th” series, Cardellini portrays a younger version of Mrs. Voorhees compared to Palmer’s portrayal. The story will delve into an unexplored aspect of the lore, with events taking place around the time when Crystal Lake is presumed to be set – the late 1950s, following Jason’s drowning as a boy in the lake. After this tragic event, numerous camp counselors met their demise at the hands of an unidentified attacker, eventually leading to Camp Crystal Lake being shut down.
Twenty years after the original events on Friday the 13th, the story resumes as locals aim to revive Camp Crystal Lake. A fresh group of would-be counselors preparing for their summer jobs begin getting mysteriously murdered. The film’s climax unveils that Mrs. Voorhees was responsible for the killings, seeking revenge because she believed reopening the camp could lead to another tragic loss like her son Jason’s fate. Devastated by what happened to Jason and wanting to prevent further heartache to mothers, Mrs. Voorhees targeted the new counselors in her attempt to halt the camp’s reopening.
In the final scenes of the initial movie, Mrs. Voorhees met her end, yet her influence persisted. Jason, resurfacing as a grown man in “Friday the 13th Part II”, avenged his mother’s decapitation from the first film and continued the bloodshed in Crystal Lake. Moreover, it was disclosed that Jason had constructed a memorial for his mom, adorned with her severed head, and would experience visions of her conversing with him. By carrying on where she had stopped, it appeared as if Jason believed he was honoring his mother’s legacy.
Will Jason Voorhees Wear the Mask in Crystal Lake?
As a die-hard fan of the chilling Crystal Lake series, I’ve often pondered about its origins, particularly regarding the iconic hockey mask that Jason Voorhees is known to wear in later installments. However, being a prequel, Crystal Lake takes us back to when young Jason was still wandering the woods, far removed from his murderous spree depicted in Friday the 13th Part 2. Consequently, it’s unlikely that the hockey mask will dominate the new series, but there’s always a possibility it might make an appearance, perhaps through flash-forwards to present-day Jason. Regardless, the suspense has been building for quite some time, and we’re eagerly waiting for fresh Friday the 13th content!
