Gearbox Software revealed that the first major expansion for Borderlands 4, called ‘Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned,’ will be available later this month on March 26, 2026. The DLC includes new story missions, a playable new character named C4SH, and a brand-new area to discover.
Here’s the expansion’s setup:
A powerful, evil force is attacking Kairos, and a strange madness spreads with the cold. Players will team up with Ellie, a skilled mechanic and Moxxi’s daughter, to destroy an alien structure and venture into the dangerous Vault of the Damned. Along the way, they’ll be guided by the unusual Mancubus Bloodtooth as they explore the frozen wasteland of The Whispering Glacier, a desolate landscape filled with wrecked ships and hidden mysteries.
To begin the downloadable content, it’s best to be at least level 13 and finish the “A Lot to Process” mission first. However, you can also start the expansion immediately by choosing a level 13 pre-made Vault Hunter from the main menu.
Alongside the new content, a major update to Borderlands 4 introduces shared progression between characters. This means things like map progress, tokens for upgrades, hovercraft parts, cosmetic items, and activity completion will all be saved to your account instead of being tied to individual characters.
Meet C4SH, the latest Vault Hunter! He’s a unique CasinoBot—a robot built for gambling—who wields a magical deck of cards. Unlike most, C4SH doesn’t see his cursed deck as a burden. Having mastered casinos and battlefields through sheer calculation, he now experiences the thrill of chance, and it makes him feel…human. This newfound feeling drives him to take risks and always back himself. In gameplay, this means C4SH’s abilities revolve around his deck, using random spells and unpredictable effects.
