First Nintendo Direct of 2026 Confirmed (But It’s Not What You’d Expect)

January was a slow month for gaming news, but things are starting to get exciting. Xbox kicked things off with a showcase of upcoming games from its partners. Now, Nintendo fans are eagerly awaiting the first major Nintendo Direct presentation of the year, which usually happens in February. Nintendo has announced a Direct is coming a little earlier than usual, though it’s not the specific showcase many fans are hoping for.

Nintendo of America just announced a Nintendo Direct presentation for January 25th. However, this Direct won’t focus on new Switch 2 games. It’s happening earlier than normal because it will be entirely dedicated to a special look at The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While it might be interesting for Mario fans, we’re still expecting a separate Direct later to reveal what Nintendo has planned for the rest of the year.

First Nintendo Direct of 2026 to Feature “No Game Information”

Nintendo will be hosting a Direct presentation on January 25th at 9 AM Eastern Time, streaming live on YouTube and the Nintendo Today! app. The showcase will feature more details about the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which hits theaters on April 3rd. If you’re excited to see the world of Super Mario Galaxy on the big screen, this Direct is expected to reveal some new and interesting information.

Don’t expect to hear about Nintendo’s 2026 games on January 25th. The upcoming presentation won’t include any new game announcements, specifically not information about the Switch 2. While it’s a little frustrating, Nintendo is making it clear upfront so fans aren’t disappointed.

We’re probably not far from the first Nintendo Direct focused on games in 2026. While Nintendo doesn’t have a fixed schedule for these presentations, they’ve typically held one in February in the past.
