The first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie was a huge success two years ago, earning over $290 million worldwide even though it was released in theaters and on the streaming service Peacock at the same time. Because of that success, a sequel is coming to theaters in a few weeks. Universal Pictures recently released a new trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2023 video game adaptation. The trailer shows new scenes, a first look at the updated animatronic characters, and hints at how the filmmakers have addressed criticisms of the original movie.
Okay, so the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie did really well in theaters, but honestly, a lot of us fans – and even people new to the series – were disappointed. It just didn’t feel like Five Nights at Freddy’s. They barely touched on the deep story we all love, and the scary vibe from the games was totally missing. But the trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2? It looks like they finally listened to the feedback! It seems like they’re really going all-in on the lore and trying to recapture that terrifying atmosphere we expect from the games. I’m cautiously optimistic, but it’s a good sign!
Five Nights at Feddy’s 2 Trailer Confirms They Learned to Embrace the Lore
The first few seconds of the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 trailer show the movie will delve deeper into the series’ story and recreate the spooky feeling that was missing from the first film. The trailer focuses on Vanessa Shelly, played by Elizabeth Lail, the police officer from the original movie, and reveals she is the daughter of William Afton. The scenes shown appear to be her dreams, which are similar to the atmosphere of the Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 game, and promise to finally reveal her history and relationship with Afton.
The trailer offers another strong hint about the story when Skeet Ulrich is revealed as a new cast member. While it hasn’t been officially stated, the footage suggests he’ll be playing Henry Emily, William Afton’s former business partner. In the Five Nights at Freddy’s games, Henry has a daughter named Charlotte, who was tragically murdered by Afton and later became the spirit inhabiting the terrifying character, The Marionette. The trailer subtly hints at this connection with Ulrich’s character talking about his deceased daughter, initially believing her death was an accident, but later realizing she was a victim of foul play, especially following the disappearance of five children. Adding to this, the final glimpse of Ulrich’s daughter in the trailer shows her wearing striped long sleeves – a clear visual echo of The Marionette’s distinctive appearance.

Fans have noticed an interesting connection: Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard previously played criminal partners in the 1996 film Scream. Now, with both actors cast in the new Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, many believe they’ll play partners again – specifically, William Afton’s accomplice, Henry Emily. It seems like too deliberate a nod to their past collaboration for the filmmakers to have overlooked, and it would be a remarkable coincidence if they weren’t connected in the story.
The latest trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 continues to build excitement by hinting at a deeper exploration of the series’ backstory. The final minute of the trailer showcases the new animatronics featured in the movie. While the “Toy” versions of the characters were previously announced, the trailer gives fans their first clear view of others, including Withered Bonnie, Balloon Boy, and notably, Mangle.
The movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 comes out on December 5th, and we’ll soon see if the filmmakers addressed fan feedback. Early trailers suggest the sequel is a step up from the first one.
