Five Years Ago Today, One Cosmic Marvel Villain Killed the MCU’s Most Powerful Avenger… With Horrifying Ease

The Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have become increasingly powerful with each new team. While the original lineup already included incredibly strong heroes like Thor, the latest version is even more formidable, truly earning the title of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.” The team assembled in Thunderbolts – dubbed the “New Avengers” – features characters like Sentry, who is powerful enough to defeat all previous Avengers teams, and that’s before considering his destructive alter ego, the Void.

Originally a comic book character, the Sentry is considered one of the Avengers’ most powerful members. He immediately made an impact by defeating the villain Carnage, but his power comes with a dangerous downside – a destructive alter ego known as the Void. This instability has caused problems, like when he was manipulated by Norman Osborn and violently defeated the God of War. The Avengers have always been wary of the Sentry, knowing he’s too strong to keep on the sidelines, but also unpredictable. Five years ago, Marvel further explored the limits of his power by introducing an even more formidable opponent.

Knull, the God of the Symbiotes, Was Too Much for Sentry

When Knull, the god of symbiotes, invaded Earth, the Avengers hoped their secret weapon, the Sentry, could save them. They believed his immense power – described as equivalent to a million exploding suns – was enough to defeat Knull, and they stalled for time until he arrived. Sentry immediately attacked, blasting Knull into space, mirroring his previous win against Carnage. However, he severely underestimated Knull, an ancient being from the very beginning of time.

The intense, but surprisingly short, battle is detailed in King of Black #1, created by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. The artwork is terrifying, intentionally reminiscent of the moment Sentry defeated Ares before the Avengers, making them realize Ares was insignificant compared to Sentry’s strength. However, even Sentry was no match for Knull, who easily defeated and destroyed him. Knull then went on to face the Avengers, certain he would win.

The King in Black storyline was a massive event for Marvel Comics, and it began with a truly shocking moment. By the end of the first issue, the Avengers had been completely defeated, and their strongest member was already gone. The entire world had fallen under Knull’s control, covered in a symbiote that blocked out the sun, leaving everyone feeling hopeless. A powerful cosmic threat had finally arrived on Earth, and the Avengers weren’t strong enough to stop it.
