Great news for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog! A fourth Sonic movie is planned for release on March 19, 2027. The first three films, starting with the original in 2020, have been a huge success, bringing the iconic character to life with a mix of live-action and animation. Each film expanded the universe – the second introduced Knuckles, and the third featured the debut of Shadow. The initial teaser for the fourth movie suggests we’ll be seeing Amy Rose and Metal Sonic. So far, the Sonic movies have earned a total of $1.2 billion at the box office, and a Knuckles streaming series has already racked up 11 million hours of viewing time.
As a huge Sonic fan, I’m not surprised Paramount is already thinking beyond the fourth film! They recently announced a big “event movie” planned for December 22, 2028, set in the Sonic universe. We don’t know exactly what it’ll be about yet, but the buzz is that it could involve Shadow the Hedgehog – maybe even a whole movie centered around him. That’s something I’d definitely be excited to see!
Paramount Planning Big Sonic Event Movie for 2027

Okay, so looking at the release dates, it’s pretty clear to me that whatever Paramount’s cooking with the next Sonic movie is going to be a direct setup for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Seriously, the timing is just too close for it to be anything else. I’m guessing the fourth film will end with some huge, world-altering event – maybe that’s what brings Shadow back to Earth to team up with Sonic, or perhaps it’ll send Sonic off to help Shadow with whatever’s going on. Either way, it feels like they’re building towards something bigger!
The main concept is that Sonic and his friends need a truly powerful villain – similar to how the Avengers fought Thanos. Within the world of Sonic the Hedgehog, Chaos stands out as a strong possibility. He’s a powerful, god-like creature originally worshipped by Knuckles’ clan. Chaos can transform and grow stronger using the Chaos Emeralds, and he’s already shown the ability to cause widespread destruction, even flooding entire cities, making him a threat to the whole world if he appeared on Earth.
Infinite is an even greater danger – a jackal with a history as the leader of a mercenary group called the Jackal Squad. He initially intended to fight Dr. Eggman, but obtaining the Phantom Ruby drastically increased his power. This transformed him into an incredibly powerful mercenary, unmatched in strength thanks to the ruby. He defeated powerful opponents like Silver the Hedgehog and even Sonic the Hedgehog not once, but twice, and single-handedly crushed the entire Resistance army. Defeating Infinite would require more than just Sonic and Knuckles working together.
The movie will also feature the Deadly Six, a group of six villains that might require Sonic to team up with allies like Shadow, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. It sounds like Paramount is planning something substantial for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and the film is currently scheduled to release on December 22, 2028, during the holidays.
