Football Manager fans have been waiting a long time for a new game, and they’re eager to get lost in it! The latest version, Football Manager 2024, starts with a strong emphasis on the basics – improved tactics, updated graphics, and easier player recruitment. These improvements will build on the game’s previous success, and Football Manager 26 aims even higher. But will it deliver? Here are 15 things you need to know about the new release.
Switch to Unity Engine
For many years, Football Manager used its own unique game engine. However, Football Manager 2026 is different – it’s the first game in the series to use Unity. This move overcomes the restrictions of the old engine and shows Sports Interactive’s commitment to building a strong future for the game. While the new engine allows for more detailed graphics, the biggest improvements are in the user interface and tactical options. Everything, from creating a manager to making transfers and changing formations – the core of the Football Manager experience – is now quicker, smoother, and more enjoyable.
Overhauled Match Day Experience
The move to the Unity Engine delivers the most visually impressive on-pitch experience yet. Dynamic lighting, realistic skies, and new surface shaders create authentic fields that react to the weather – looking wet in the rain, dry in the heat, and covered in snow during winter. Stadiums have been updated, from large arenas to smaller local grounds, enhancing the atmosphere of every game. While graphics aren’t the primary focus of the FM series, the improved fidelity in FM26 creates a more immersive and electric atmosphere than ever before.
Authentic Player Animations
FM26 features a huge number of new player animations, making the game feel more realistic than ever. These movements – for dribbling, passing, and shooting – are based on data from Hawk-Eye Innovations, adding excitement to every attack. Building on the off-the-ball animations introduced in FM24 and using Sports Interactive’s own motion capture technology, players in FM26 move more naturally, with realistic reactions and intentions. These improvements give managers a better understanding of the game, helping them make smarter tactical choices.
Revamped Match Overview
FM26 features a redesigned match overview that gives you all the information you need to stay ahead of the competition. It combines live game data, advice from your staff, and league standings to provide useful context. Updated stats now include xG, xA, player stamina, heat maps, and momentum graphs, helping you make smart decisions during matches – like whether to push for more goals or play defensively. Dynamic highlights automatically focus on the most exciting moments, and improved camera angles give you a clear view of every key play, allowing you to thoroughly analyze your team’s performance.
Dual Formations are a Tactical Evolution
In past versions of Football Manager, changing your team’s formation impacted how they played both when they had the ball and when they didn’t. Football Manager 2026 adds more depth with separate formations for attacking (‘In Possession’) and defending (‘Out of Possession’). However, it’s not just about picking two static shapes. The game now reflects the complexities of real-world tactics. For example, choosing a 4-2-3-1 attacking formation doesn’t guarantee your team will always attack that way. Managers can adjust player roles so the team shifts to a 4-2-4 when they get closer to the opponent’s goal. The ‘Out of Possession’ formations work similarly, letting you set up different defensive approaches – like pressing high, holding the middle of the field, or defending the box – and giving players more freedom to react, mirroring the flexibility of modern football.
Redesigned Tactics Menu

The tactics menu has been completely updated in FM26 to give you more control than ever before. You can now view your team’s setup in four different ways: how they play when in possession of the ball, how they behave when out of possession, a view showing both formations side-by-side, or a combined view showing average player positions. These views make it easier to compare how your team operates during a match, and the new Visualiser tool lets you see exactly how your tactics are working – helping you to improve your attack and tighten up your defense.
Evolved Player Roles
In Football Manager 2026, Sports Interactive has revamped player roles to better support using two different formations. While some familiar roles return from FM24 with added features, several entirely new roles have been introduced. These new roles work alongside player behavior when defending, combining their usual positioning with their individual skills. Each role is now rated using Football Manager’s familiar five-star system, making it easier to align your team’s style with your training, scouting, and transfer strategies.
Women’s Football Debuts
For the first time ever, women’s football is included in Football Manager, and it’s a major addition. This shows Sports Interactive’s commitment to providing the same detailed experience for the women’s game as they do for the men’s. The update will feature a huge database of 34,000 players and staff from over 4,000 clubs across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, all within realistic league systems.
Streamlined UI Design
The user interface in FM26 has been redesigned to be more intuitive and efficient, based on what players asked for. It focuses on showing you the most important information exactly when you need it. Beyond just making things look good with clear fonts and colors, the new design uses tiles that give you quick overviews, which you can expand for more details. The updated Portal brings your home screen and messages together in one place, with helpful filters, guidance, and news, so making key decisions – like picking your team, managing training, and hiring staff – is faster and easier.
Shrewd Recruitment System
The user interface in FM26 has been simplified, bringing all recruitment features into a single hub. This combines familiar elements from FM24 with new features to make navigating the transfer market easier. It’s now simpler to spot weaknesses in your squad thanks to direct links to the Squad Planner, and contract durations are displayed in a clear, visual way. Overall, FM26’s updated recruitment tools help managers quickly pinpoint where their team needs strengthening.
TransferRoom Levels Up
Building on the TransferRoom feature introduced in FM24, FM26 adds two new tools for finding players: Requirements and Pitch Opportunities. Requirements let you clearly tell scouts and agents exactly what kind of player you need – their age, skill level, position, and how they’ll fit your tactics. Pitch Opportunities work the other way around, showing you what other clubs are looking for. With your Director of Football more involved, these improvements make building a team that matches your vision much easier.
Smarter Scouting
Football Manager 2026 (FM26) now integrates player roles – both when your team has the ball and when they don’t – into how scouts search for new talent. This simplifies things, as your staff will analyze players and tell you how well they’d fit into your team’s formations. This information is presented clearly with easy-to-understand color coding. With better contract options, easier loan deals, and improved AI for building your squad, FM26 stays realistic while giving you the freedom to develop your team over multiple seasons without learning complicated new systems.
Official FIFA License Incoming

When Football Manager 2026 (FM26) launched without international tournaments, many fans were disappointed. Historically, managing international teams hasn’t been a major focus in the Football Manager series. However, Sports Interactive has announced plans to significantly improve this aspect of the game with a new, multi-year partnership with FIFA. Before the summer’s World Cup, an update will add official licenses for the FIFA World Cup 26, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup, including authentic kits and broadcast visuals. This update also promises a more detailed and engaging international management mode, though specific details are still forthcoming.
