Over its five seasons, For All Mankind has crafted a rich alternate history, building a detailed world and a compelling cast of characters whose stories span decades. This long-term approach was intentional from the start, with storylines carefully set up from the beginning. As the show jumps forward in time with each season, it continues to expand on these established threads. A prime example is how the children of the original main characters have grown from minor roles into central figures with their own complex storylines—and sometimes, heartbreaking fates.
The show For All Mankind has often featured the children of its original characters, like Kelly Baldwin and Danny and Jimmy Stevens, gradually giving them more important roles. Now that the series has moved into the 2010s and key original characters like Ed Baldwin are no longer around, the focus is shifting to a new generation. While Ed’s grandson, Alex Poletov, has been central to Season 5, the latest episode introduced another surprising connection to the show’s history: Avery Jarrett, revealed to be the granddaughter of Gordo and Tracy Stevens and the daughter of Danny Stevens.
For All Mankind Puts Gordo’s Granddaughter in the Spotlight

The new character in For All Mankind is initially presented as a mystery – we see a marine taking a lie detector test. It’s revealed she’s had some emotional difficulties in the past, but is hoping her military service will qualify her for the Off-Planet Expeditionary Force. The questioning becomes increasingly personal, eventually focusing on why she took her stepfather’s last name – her mother made that decision for her. She then shares that her biological father died when she was very young and she doesn’t see him as her father. This is when it becomes clear who she is and why the Marines are so carefully investigating her background.
Watching AJ, played by Ines Asserson, is really striking to me. It’s so clear she’s intentionally distancing herself from her family’s past – she wants to forge her own identity and avoid repeating their mistakes. Knowing the history – her grandfather Gordo’s breakdown on the moon, and then her father Danny’s even more tragic actions – makes it even more poignant. But what’s fascinating is how, throughout the episode, AJ starts to show some of the same tendencies. I was really surprised to see her snap at Commander Poole, convinced he was undermining her OPEF application – it felt like a clear echo of the men in her family.
Ultimately, she discovers she’s passed the test and been accepted into OPEF, easing her anxieties. She succeeds partly by taking Commander Poole’s advice: being truthful with both her superior and herself about her motivations. The final test allows her to stop pretending to be strong and instead embrace her vulnerability, confronting the painful emotions surrounding her father’s death.
Will Avery Break the Cycle of the Stevens Family?
It would have been simple for the show For All Mankind to leave Danny’s daughter, Avery, out of the story, especially since we last saw her in Season 4 at her ninth birthday party. Before that, she only appeared briefly as a baby in a few episodes during Season 3. However, bringing Avery back now reinforces the show’s consistent themes – exploring how characters are shaped by their pasts, how legacies impact their choices, and how even small childhood experiences can change the course of their lives.
The big question hanging over Avery is whether she’ll overcome the pattern of trouble that’s plagued her family—her father and grandparents all struggled with similar issues. The show suggests she might, as she’s already started making different choices by listening to Danielle Poole, which led to success and seemed to bring her inner peace. This is a clear break from the path her father and grandfather took. The finale shows Avery celebrating her acceptance into OPEF and learning she’s been assigned to a mission on the moon. As she looks up at the moon, she seems hopeful that this journey will help her discover and heal even more within herself.
As a huge fan of For All Mankind, I’ve been thinking a lot about where things are going, especially with a revolution brewing on Mars. It makes me wonder how long Avery will even stay on the moon! It would fit the show perfectly if her work with OPEF eventually sends her to Mars, particularly if the situation there escalates and the governments and companies involved – like M-6, Helios, and Kuragin – need more help. I can totally see Avery ending up on Mars, and honestly, I’m bracing myself for a clash with Alex Poletov. The show loves bringing things full circle, and having Gordo and Ed’s grandkids on opposite sides of a major off-world conflict just feels like where the story is headed by the end of the season.
