In the world of “For All Mankind,” the universe is broadening as the spinoff titled “Star City” makes its way. First announced at Apple TV+ in April 2024, alongside Season 5 renewal for the main series, Star City will delve into the Soviet Union’s space program, offering an alternate account of the space race. At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, creator Ron Moore hinted that this change could bring a distinct atmosphere and a more somber tone to the show.
The story “Star City” is set in a version of the Soviet Union that’s quite distinct from Houston, as explained by Moore. In Houston, making mistakes might lead to losing your job or being reassigned to an undesirable position. However, in Star City, making errors could potentially result in severe consequences, such as getting shot.
In a different timeline where the Soviet Union was first to reach the moon instead of the United States, the series For All Mankind debuted in 2019. This continuation of the space race lasted for decades due to this early Soviet success. Known as a “fast-paced, suspenseful drama,” according to its official summary, the show Star City delves into the pivotal moment in this alternate history account of the space race when the Soviets landed on the moon. Unlike other stories, this series will provide an insider’s view of the events unfolding within the Iron Curtain, focusing on the lives of cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence officers working within the Soviet space program, and the daring decisions they made to advance mankind.
Moore expressed to ComicBook that the Soviet Union was “an entirely distinct realm, where they grapple with unique political issues.” Moreover, he mentioned that aside from their technology being impressive, it generally lagged behind NASA’s. Lastly, he highlighted the immense bravery present within their space program.
The astronauts, their historical exploits that we’ll depict in our upcoming series, involved them boarding spaceships with bolt-like protrusions, which left one wondering, ‘Can they really fit inside this thing?’ Unfortunately, they suffered losses – people were lost over the years, many of whom were kept hidden and their deaths concealed until much later. This was a bold, ambitious program that took place under a totalitarian government during the Cold War, with plenty of espionage activities. Consequently, our show has a distinctly different tone compared to For All Mankind – it’s darker in nature.
The town of Star City was brought to life by creators Ben Nedivi, Matt Wolpert, and Moore, hinting that filming has already begun. In this series, Rhys Ifans (known for his role in House of the Dragon) plays the Chief Designer, who is instrumental in leading the Soviet Space program. The ensemble also features Solly McLeod from House of the Dragon as Sasha, a cosmonaut known for his reckless behavior but yet to reach his full potential; Agnes O’Casey from Dangerous Liaisons as Irina, a new recruit in Star City’s surveillance department; and Alice Englert from Ratched as Anastasia, an inexperienced female cosmonaut within the Soviet Space program.
As for now, there’s no set date for the premiere of Star City or Season 5 of For All Mankind.
