Today is a genuinely momentous day if you happen to be a fan of the Trails franchise.
Trails beyond the Horizon, the newest game in the popular Trails RPG series from Falcom, will be released on January 15, 2026.
Essentially, with Horizon now available, the Western release of the property is finally complete.
For the first time ever, all of the Trails games released in Japan are now available in other countries. It’s been a long wait – decades, in fact – but it’s finally become a reality.

Falcom is a relatively small company, and after the first three Trails in the Sky games came out in 2004, they had difficulty bringing their games to Western audiences.
The series didn’t reach Western audiences until 2015. Xseed Games released the first Trails of Cold Steel for PS3 and PS Vita in North America, two years after its original release in Japan. Meanwhile, NIS America published it in Europe, which caused some confusion.
The Trails of Cold Steel series truly gained popularity in North America and Europe with the updated PS4 release in 2019, published by NIS America.
By this point, however, the West had fallen far behind the Japanese release schedule.
Thankfully, the popularity of both The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and its immediate follow-up proved enough for NIS America to decide to continue bringing the games to new audiences.
Over the next four and a half years, the publisher released English versions of several Trails games, including Cold Steel 3 and 4, the two Crossbell games that came before the Cold Steel story, Trails into Reverie, and both Daybreak games.
It was a huge undertaking, but it allowed us to finally catch up to the latest game in the Trails series.
This might not seem significant if you’re not familiar with Falcom’s work, but matching the release date in Japan has been a goal we’ve been working towards for a very long time.
After covering these games for so long, it feels incredibly surreal to be here.
A new Trails game is reportedly in the works, separate from the upcoming remake of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, which will be released globally. It will be exciting to find out when it’s officially announced and if it will be available worldwide.
