Forget Jean Grey, This is Wolverine’s Perfect Love Interest

Wolverine has experienced many romances throughout his long life, but his connection with Jean Grey remains the most talked-about. From the moment they met in the late 1970s, Wolverine was drawn to Jean, sparking a complex and enduring love triangle with Cyclops. Their on-again, off-again relationship became legendary among X-Men fans. While Wolverine has had other significant partners, many believe Jean Grey is his ultimate love interest, and their connection feels uniquely special.

The recent Krakoa era in X-Men comics brought Wolverine and Jean Grey closer, though they never became a couple. Most fans agree they wouldn’t be a good match. Now that the Krakoa era is over, Wolverine has been single, but that looks like it’s about to change. The current Wolverine comic series (#14) introduced Silver Sable, and the writer, Saladin Ahmed, has hinted at a developing romance. While some Wolverine fans are hesitant about this pairing, Silver Sable’s backstory actually makes her a surprisingly good fit for Logan.

Silver Sable and Wolverine Have Operated in the Same World for Years

As a longtime comic fan, I remember Silver Sable first showing up back in The Amazing Spider-Man #265. Her backstory is pretty cool – she was trained by her dad, Ernst Sablinova, who ran the Wild Pack. After he passed away, she took over and turned the Wild Pack into Silver Sable International, eventually becoming a leader in her country, Symkaria. She even had her own comic series for a bit in the early nineties, but it never really took off. Mostly, she’s been a supporting character here and there. Recently, though, during the Krakoa era, they did something interesting with her in The Uncanny Spider-Man – she had a brief romance with Nightcrawler, which was a bit of a surprise!

Sable isn’t like Wolverine in that she wasn’t created through experimentation. However, they share deeper similarities. Both have experienced the loss of family and loved ones due to their dangerous lifestyles. They’ve both spent a long time fighting in battles and have worked as mercenaries. Their lives have consistently been filled with peril, and both are willing to do whatever it takes to complete a mission – Sable, like Wolverine, has faced criticism from other heroes for her willingness to kill. Furthermore, both have lost their homes – Wolverine has lost Krakoa and the X-Mansion multiple times, and Symkaria fell into chaos after Sable was overthrown.

While Sable fights with a more ruthless, business-like approach than Wolverine, she’s just as dedicated to protecting her people. Like Logan, she’ll do anything necessary for those she cares about, and their combined efforts could even lead to reclaiming her homeland. Despite their different personalities, Sable and Wolverine share a lot of common ground, and it’s surprising they haven’t teamed up more often given how alike they are.

What’s particularly compelling about Logan and Sable is their shared history could extend to World War II – Logan might have even fought with Sable’s family back then, adding an intriguing layer to their connection. They’re a great match with a lot of potential, and their strong personalities will naturally create conflict and drama. It’s unusual for Wolverine to be with someone so similar to himself—most of his past relationships, even with other superpowered individuals, have been with very different personalities—which means this pairing has endless possibilities.

Wolverine and Silver Sable Could Become an Iconic Relationship

As you’d expect from a Marvel story, Wolverine and Silver Sable initially clash before discovering they share a common goal: protecting a new group of Morlocks who are now living in Canada. The recent Wolverine series hasn’t been a hit with all fans, and many are hesitant about this pairing. Some fans don’t even know who Silver Sable is, and that alone is enough for them to dislike the team-up. However, a closer look at both characters shows that they actually complement each other quite well.

Wolverine could really benefit from a significant, lasting romantic relationship. While Jean Grey is often mentioned, and some argue for Storm, many of his past loves haven’t stuck around or tragically didn’t survive. Silver Sable would be an excellent addition to his life, offering fresh story possibilities for both characters. She’s a strong, underutilized character who could be a fantastic long-term partner for Wolverine – after all, he’s known for attracting interesting women.
