Forget Krypto, DC Just Introduced a Real Nightmare Dog

Nightwing finds himself in a tricky situation as the Titans Tower has been seized by Nite-Mite, who’s gone rogue, and Barbara Gordon (Oracle) is trapped on the top floor. A fanboy from the fifth dimension has tampered with time and space within the tower, creating terrifying monsters for Nightwing to battle through. This chaos is orchestrated by a mysterious villain named Zanni. To make matters worse, Nite-Mite’s uncontrolled reality-bending powers have twisted the Tower into a horrifying reflection of Nightwing’s past, including an unsettling enemy – a monstrous, evil version of his beloved dog, Haley. As he strives to save Barbara, Nightwing must confront this formidable foe that he never wished to battle: a vicious, bulked-up version of his pet dog, Haley, who might just be the most powerful canine in DC Comics, surpassing even Krypto.

Titans Tower Under Siege

Equipped with a fresh suit and weapons powered by Kappa energy, capable of harming fifth-dimensional beings like the ones Spheric Solutions conveniently possessed, I, Nightwing, ventured into Titans Tower – a once familiar homebase now transformed into an infinitely vast realm, filled with sections and entire worlds that seemed to materialize from what existed before. Trying to communicate with Nite-Mite, I found no response, instead encountering a small army of Deathwings, a villain from the future who mistakenly believed me to be Dick Grayson. As more and more of them emerged, they were suddenly obliterated as another individual descended from above on a jetpack. It was Nightwing-Prime, Van-Zee of the Bottle City of Kandor.

The duo of Nightwings joined forces, with Van-Zee warning Dick that if he wishes to ascend to the highest floor of Titanis, he must navigate the fearsome Elevator Zone, a place where only one being has ever been reported to have survived, and it hails from beyond. The Terror of Titanis. They navigated towards its captivity, and as they advanced, Dick began to comprehend that this entire dimension was constructed on his memories and legends, the fragments of history defining him as Nightwing. Van-Zee came to understand that this signified he wasn’t genuine, but remained committed to maintaining peace nonetheless. They proceeded towards the detainment area, yet an unexpected betrayal ensued when Van-Zee turned against his friend. Perceiving Nightwing as a potential disruptor of Titanis’s fragile tranquility, he imprisoned him alongside the Beast, aiming to annihilate him. As Dick readied for combat, he beheld an abhorrent creature emerging, standing at least fifteen feet tall with fiery red eyes and six colossal arms. All Dick could contemplate was a single question: what transpired between Nite-Mite and his pet?

Bitewing, Beast of Titanis?

For those unfamiliar, Haley, a three-legged pitbull, joined forces with Nightwing when he saved her from cruel teenagers. Introduced in issue #78 of the 2016 run of Nightwing by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo, Haley has been a beloved part of Nightwing’s story ever since. Given the name Bitewing upon meeting Nite-Mite and receiving a unique costume, Haley is typically a typical dog with no extraordinary powers or intelligence. However, following an accidental transformation by Nite-Mite that affected Titans Tower, Haley has grown into a monstrous version of her former self. Now, Nightwing must confront this enlarged version of his beloved canine companion.

The Titanis Beast stands in stark contrast to Haley. Unlike a tiny, snuggly companion, it’s an enormous beast that seems capable of reducing Krypto the Superdog to a plaything. It’s the top animal in DC I wouldn’t want to cross paths with, but its nature isn’t entirely malicious. Given its apparent connection to Nite-Mite’s deep affection for Nightwing, there’s a chance that the hero might be able to communicate with it. Perhaps Nite-Mite has an unusual fear of dogs, yet he trusts that Haley admires Nightwing, which gives him hope in calming her down and rescuing Oracle. If not, he had better hope she enjoys playing fetch instead of going for the attack.
