For years, many believed Frank Herbert’s Dune couldn’t be made into a movie, but Denis Villeneuve proved them wrong. Released in 2021, Dune immediately drew viewers into the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his journey to become a legendary figure. However, this rise to power began with a devastating blow: the near-total destruction of House Atreides orchestrated by Baron Harkonnen. Only Paul, his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), and Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) survived, and it was from this tragic starting point that the story unfolded.
Dune: Part Two returned to the desert planet Arrakis, following Paul and Jessica as they integrated with the Fremen people. Many Fremen believed Paul was their prophesied leader. While Paul initially tried to remain true to himself, he ultimately rose to power, defeating Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen and the Emperor to become a dominant figure in the universe. The film also depicted the Fremen fighting back against Baron Harkonnen and his forces, regaining territory. However, the central story focused on Paul’s growing influence among the Fremen, who came to revere him as Muad’Dib and then as Lisan al-Gaib. This transformation wasn’t spontaneous, though—a hidden force was subtly guiding him all along.
Lady Jessica Transformed Into Someone Sinister in Dune: Part Two
Lady Jessica, both Duke Leto’s companion and Paul’s mother, was a key figure from the beginning of the Dune story. She belonged to the Bene Gesserit, an ancient sisterhood that subtly controlled humanity’s destiny through political and religious maneuvering. Jessica was carefully bred over generations to become Leto’s lover and bear him a daughter, intended to marry Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen and produce the Kwisatz Hadarach – a being with prescient abilities. Though the Bene Gesserit maintained power to shape the universe, Jessica defied their plans when she fell in love with Leto. She was supposed to have only a daughter to further the Bene Gesserit’s goals, but she instead gave birth to a son, Paul Atreides. After the Atreides family was attacked by Emperor Corrino and House Harkonnen, Paul and Jessica escaped to the Fremen people. Among them, Paul became a legendary figure known as the Lisan al-Ghaib, believed to be the savior of Arrakis.
In the story Dune, Jessica is a loving mother and wife who experiences a significant transformation. Stilgar offers her the role of Reverend Mother among the Fremen, and she drinks the Water of Life, gaining complete knowledge of the universe. However, she was pregnant, and her unborn daughter also received this knowledge. Jessica survived and became Reverend Mother, giving her immense power to advance the Bene Gesserit’s long-term plan – a subtle influence they had been building across populations for generations. One element of this plan was the prophecy of the Lisan al-Gaib, which the Bene Gesserit instilled in the Fremen, and Jessica used her newfound power to ensure her son was seen as the fulfillment of this prophecy.
Paul Atreides never wanted to be a messiah and repeatedly rejected the title, emphasizing he simply wanted to help the Fremen people. However, a major turning point in Dune: Part Two was Jessica’s change of heart. She became driven by a desire for power and actively promoted her son as their savior, pushing the Fremen to believe he was the prophesied leader. Even though Paul consistently denied the prophecy, Jessica worked tirelessly to convince fervent believers that he was Lisan al-Gaib. She traveled south, spreading the message, despite Paul’s visions of the devastating holy war that would follow if he embraced the role. Ultimately, Jessica manipulated events to ensure the prophecy was fulfilled, even though Paul foresaw the catastrophic consequences.
Jessica Raised Paul To Follow The Prophecy Since He Was A Child
Jessica skillfully used the environment of Arrakis to her advantage. As a member of the Bene Gesserit, she understood the prophecy wasn’t real, but rather a set of conditions she could manipulate. She knew that by encouraging the Fremen’s religious beliefs, she could convince them her son was the predicted savior. From a young age, Jessica prepared Paul to become the Lisan al-Gaib, nurturing his natural prescient abilities which were amplified by the spice on Arrakis. She taught him the Bene Gesserit skills, including the Voice, making him an even stronger candidate for the messianic role. Paul was exceptional – able to see through deception, ride sandworms, and fit perfectly into the Fremen prophecy. The final step was for him to drink the Water of Life, a ritual never before performed by a man.
Paul Atreides’ survival after drinking the Water of Life was the final step in his transformation into a being with extraordinary powers. This, combined with his already existing ability to see glimpses of the past and future, allowed him to understand people completely, ultimately convincing the Fremen to follow him. Paul’s mother, Jessica, fulfilled the Fremen’s deep longing for a savior, skillfully using their hope for a better Arrakis, even though Paul warned her his rule would bring devastation. When he declared himself Lisan al-Gaib and took the Emperor’s throne, the future was sealed, but the consequences were already unavoidable. The Bene Gesserit, led by Jessica, had created and nurtured a prophecy so powerfully that Paul was forced to fulfill it. In the movies, it’s still unclear how much Paul truly embraces his god-like status, especially considering his knowledge of the Bene Gesserit’s manipulations.
Jessica was the driving force behind everything that happened in Dune: Part Two, essentially shaping Paul into the leader and emperor he became. Even though Paul repeatedly stated he didn’t believe he was the prophesied figure, Lisan al-Gaib, Jessica subtly pushed him towards accepting that role. Initially, he only wanted to help Chani’s people, but Jessica’s influence became overwhelming. After experiencing the Water of Life, Paul underwent a significant transformation, ultimately declaring war on the other Houses despite his love for Chani. Jessica’s actions stemmed from a long-term plan, but she defied the Bene Gesserit sisterhood by choosing to have a son, going against their carefully engineered religious designs. She then expertly trained Paul, preparing him for the role of Lisan al-Gaib. Those familiar with the books know Paul’s rise to power wasn’t easy, and Jessica understood the potential devastation. While Paul struggled against his fate, Jessica had manipulated events to leave him with little choice. He ultimately fulfilled a prophecy created by the Bene Gesserit, even as he took a darker path. Though Paul’s transformation felt villainous, Lady Jessica was the true architect of it all, breaking the rules of the Bene Gesserit while simultaneously ensuring their most important prediction came true.
