The upcoming movie titled “Resident Evil: Requiem” appears promising. It focuses on a character’s daughter from the less-acknowledged game in the Resident Evil series, “Resident Evil: Outbreak”. While recent mainline games like “Resident Evil 7” have been successful for Capcom, there’s a spin-off series that hasn’t received as much attention. However, it is considered the best spin-off for Resident Evil. I am eagerly waiting for another installment in the “Resident Evil: Revelations” series, as it seems to be the only opportunity for the franchise’s lesser-known characters to regain the spotlight again.
Currently, the Resident Evil: Revelations series comprises two distinct games. The initial installment, titled simply Resident Evil: Revelations, focuses predominantly on characters Chris and Jill, immersing players in the chilling atmosphere through the perspective of the franchise’s original iconic heroes. Conversely, in Resident Evil: Revelations 2, you control Claire and Moira, with occasional segments featuring Barry and Natalia. Though these games may reference events from the main series, they stand independently, allowing players to appreciate them without prior knowledge of those titles.
Resident Evil Is Sleeping on Its Best Spin-Off
In essence, Revelations combines elements of horror and action similar to what you find in RE4, but its gameplay structure differs from the core series. Instead, it’s structured as a series of episodic games. This format allows for smooth transitions between different groups of characters, enabling the story to be told from various viewpoints to provide a comprehensive understanding.
I’m neither particularly fond nor critical of games with an episodic format, but I believe it suited RE: Revelations 2 exceptionally well. This type of release structure provides players the flexibility to pause and resume playing whenever convenient, which can be particularly beneficial since many gamers don’t have the luxury of marathon sessions due to time constraints, regardless of the game or series involved.
Revelations Games Let More Characters Appear
It seems evident that the Revelations series is the only place where we’ll see some familiar faces reappear in the Resident Evil franchise, so here’s hoping this trend persists if a Resident Evil: Revelations 3 ever materializes. The Revelations games are responsible for bringing back fan favorites like Jill, Claire, and Barry, who have made comebacks in non-remake Resident Evil titles, alongside an array of new characters. By maintaining the Revelations games separate from the main series, it provides more chances to reintroduce these characters without needing to come up with explanations for their presence.
I appreciate the new direction Resident Evil has taken in its recent games, yet I also recognize the potential of the Revelations spin-offs to bring back beloved characters for a more focused storyline. Although there are no clear signs about Capcom’s future plans for Revelations, I hope it will receive a third installment, and perhaps we’ll get to see Jill and Claire team up together in that game.
