Forget the Avengers, the MCU’s Newest Superhero is a Perfect Fit for the X-Men

The new Disney+ show, Wonder Man, has added Simon Williams to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as its latest hero, and he’s a great fit for the X-Men. It’s been a bit unclear how the X-Men will officially join the MCU, but characters with mutant abilities are starting to appear. We first saw this with Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, where she was established as a mutant instead of an Inhuman, as she is in the comics. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also revealed Namor has mutant powers, though neither he nor Kamala are currently part of the X-Men team.

The X-Men characters we know from the comics are showing up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not as you might expect. Instead of being brand new characters within the main MCU timeline, we’re seeing versions of Wolverine, Cyclops, and Professor X who come from alternate universes – specifically, the ones previously featured in the FOX films. This means the X-Men haven’t truly been introduced into the main MCU yet. While it’s unclear when we’ll see a fully established X-Men team, many fans hope the upcoming Wonder Man project will play a role in bringing them into the fold.

Simon Williams Is The MCU’s Perfect New X-Men Member

In the Marvel series Wonder Man, Simon Williams is a character with extraordinary abilities, and a key mystery is the origin of those powers. The comics reveal that Simon gained his abilities through a deal with Baron Zemo, who empowered him to spy on the Avengers. Although this scheme is eventually uncovered and Zemo is caught, Simon ultimately transforms into a genuine hero.

Because the Avengers and Zemo never refer to this event, many fans believe Simon Williams in the MCU is actually a mutant. The story suggests he was born with his powers and, like several mutants in the comics, views them as a burden. Given that the MCU has already changed the origins of characters like Ms. Marvel to establish them as mutants, it’s reasonable to think they might do the same for Simon Williams.

Let’s imagine Simon Williams is a mutant. If so, he’d be an ideal addition to the X-Men team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because his story isn’t firmly established, bringing him on board wouldn’t disrupt the overall MCU narrative. Casting Yahya Abdul-Mateen II would also boost the marketing for an X-Men film. Importantly, including characters like Simon would help the MCU’s X-Men team stand out from the previous films made by FOX, allowing for a fresh approach.

Simon’s journey as a character closely mirrors those of many X-Men. Like them, he likely was born with powers that are connected to a difficult past. He’s also viewed with fear by those who don’t understand him and is being pursued by the government. This makes him instantly relatable to other mutants and a strong candidate to join the X-Men in the future.

The MCU Can Finally Adapt Wonder Man’s True Origin Story (But With The X-Men)

If Simon joins the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would open the door to finally telling his complete origin story from the comics. Given the Department of Damage Control (DODC) is actively seeking powered individuals, a future film could feature them recruiting Simon Williams to fight other mutants. He might be coerced or blackmailed into joining the team, similar to his dynamic with Zemo in the comics, but with the key difference being that he’d already have his powers.

Joining the X-Men offered Simon a chance to escape the control of the DODC and truly belong. The team, recognizing their shared experiences, welcomed him as a full member.

Now that Wonder Man has finished, Simon Williams has the potential to appear in future X-Men stories within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are many famous X-Men storylines he could fit into, suggesting a promising future for the character. While he likely won’t become an Avenger, the X-Men seem like his best chance for a significant, ongoing role in the MCU.
