Darth Maul first appeared in The Phantom Menace as the embodiment of everything the Jedi feared about the Sith: driven by revenge, fueled by rage, and incredibly skilled. Though Obi-Wan Kenobi seemingly defeated him, George Lucas later brought the character back in The Clone Wars. Now, 27 years after his introduction, Maul is getting his own Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord. The show, set during the time of the Empire, will explore how Maul navigates a galaxy ruled by the Sith.
The newest issue of Star Wars Insider includes an interview with Sam Witwer, the voice actor for Darth Maul (who previously discussed this on The Holo Files). Witwer says that Maul secretly wishes there were more Jedi to fight. He explains that Maul was taught to despise and eliminate the Jedi without ever thinking for himself.
“Now he’s looking at the galaxy going, ‘Boy, we could sure use a Jedi Knight or two.’ At least with the Jedi you knew where they stood. There’s something to respect there. This Empire, he sees no values there, just the naked grab for influence, power, and money. Principles are gone. And he looks at that with a certain level of distaste. He may not have agreed with the Jedi Knights, but at least they had principles. You knew who you were dealing with and you could reason with that. There’s no reasoning with the Empire.”
Most Star Wars stories feature clear heroes and villains, but this show is different. As actor Sam Witwer put it, it’s a conflict between bad people and even worse people, and his character, Maul, is on the side of the villains.
Maul – Shadow Lord is the First Star Wars Story To Really Star a Villain
Understanding Darth Maul’s motivations is crucial: while he’s a villain, he’s different from the truly manipulative Palpatine, and he’s actually been used and betrayed by the Sith. They replaced him with Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One, and left Maul behind. Now, Maul isn’t focused on destroying the Jedi – his anger is directed at the Sith, and he wants revenge. This creates an exciting conflict between two villainous factions, and fans are eagerly anticipating a long-awaited confrontation between Darth Maul and Darth Vader after 27 years.
As a Star Wars fan, I was blown away by the Maul – Shadow Lord trailer! It’s not just beautifully animated, but it feels much more raw and intense, really putting you in Maul’s head. Honestly, it feels like something totally new for Star Wars – we haven’t really seen a story told from this angle before. Leslye Headland’s The Acolyte hinted at similar themes with other sidelined Sith, but that series didn’t get a chance to fully explore it. That’s why Maul – Shadow Lord feels like it’s going to be truly special and unlike anything else in the franchise.
It’s been revealed that Darth Maul is training an apprentice named Devon Izara, a Padawan who lived through the execution of Order 66. The story also confirms the existence of other Jedi who survived Order 66. Previously, it was thought Maul would fight these surviving Jedi, but a recent statement suggests a different possibility: could Maul want the Jedi to return, seeing them as a danger to Palpatine? If so, we might even see him assisting them, though likely for his own selfish and malicious reasons.
