Forgotten Faces: 7 Iconic Characters You Didn’t Know Debuted Together!

It often appears that there are increasingly more characters being introduced in comics every day, with writers sometimes adding several new faces in a single issue. These additions are usually not significant, but occasionally, one highly popular character can make their debut alongside another who subsequently becomes equally iconic. Although this isn’t particularly surprising in principle, it’s always intriguing when two prominent characters first appear together in the same issue.

Here’s a less formal way of expressing the given text: Sometimes we overlook the fact that some significant characters made their entrance at the same time as their more famous counterparts. With this thought in mind, I’d like to introduce 7 characters who debuted in issues that are often remembered for being the first appearances of others instead.

1) Commissioner Gordon (Alongside Batman in Detective Comics #27)

After going through numerous Batman comics, you might expect remembering the debut of Commissioner Gordon to be a piece of cake. Yet, when one recalls Detective Comics #27, it’s usually not Commissioner Gordon that comes to mind; instead, it’s Batman who takes center stage.

It’s quite intriguing to reflect on the fact that the two main characters who kick-started Batman’s storyline were present in the same issue. Given the magnitude of this character, one would expect it to be more memorable that he made his debut in Detective Comics #27.

2) Catwoman (Alongside The Joker in Batman #1)

In their initial encounters, whether it was aboard a ship or along a street, Catwoman’s debut for readers took place in Batman issue #1, marking the first appearance of the Joker as well. Since then, these characters have grown to become some of the most iconic figures within Batman’s entire narrative. While Catwoman has primarily focused on capturing Batman’s affections, the Joker has repeatedly attempted to endanger his heart through violence. It’s fascinating to consider that they both made their debut during the Golden Age, a testament to the creative prowess of those times. What an era!

3) Emma Frost (Alongside Kitty Pryde in Uncanny X-Men #129)

In this movie review, I was initially familiar with both Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost from their various appearances in the Marvel universe, but what truly caught my attention in issue #129 of Uncanny X-Men was the revelation that these two iconic characters first graced the comic book world on the same page.

While Emma Frost may have gained a higher profile status over time, it’s Kitty Pryde who holds an equally cherished place in fans’ hearts. What makes this issue intriguing is that while Kitty debuted as a hero, Emma began her journey as a villainess – a stark contrast that adds depth to their characters and the storyline.

Over time, Emma has been portrayed in various ways, ultimately aligning with the X-Men. However, it appears that Marvel is increasingly leaning towards reinforcing her character as more antagonistic or villainous, akin to the devil’s side.

4) Magik (Alongside several characters, including Storm in Giant-Sized X-Men #1)

Initially making an appearance in the comic “Giant-Size X-Men” #1 at just five years old, Illyana Rasputin was first introduced under the name Magik later on. This early role is quite different from her typical storyline, yet it’s fascinating to see her here, especially given that this issue also marked the debut of significant characters like Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Thunderbird.

Currently writing on my own, Magik remains a beloved mutant character, except for a brief dip in popularity during the ’90s. Magik has established herself as an independent figure, often outshining others and even Colossus. The original New Mutants series wouldn’t have been nearly as robust without her presence, and it started to falter once she left. This doesn’t mean the series became terrible; Cable was on the horizon, and the lack of consistent artwork was an issue, but Magik was the heart of that team.

5) Aquaman (Alongside Green Arrow in More Fun Comics #73)

I was surprised to discover during my research that Aquaman and Green Arrow first appeared together in the same comic issue. Although they were featured in different stories, the fact remains that they both made their debut at the same time. Since then, these two heroes have carved out substantial roles within the DC Universe and even teamed up as members of the Justice League.

6) Lois Lane (Alongside Superman in Action Comics #1)

It’s important to celebrate not only Superman’s initial appearance but also Lois Lane’s, as they complement each other beautifully. Both characters have a unique ability to complete one another, making their relationship endearing. From the beginning, they’ve been intertwined, and it’s delightful to see this connection. They are both flawless in every aspect, and there’s always room for more of either one – they never cease to captivate us.

It’s clear that the simultaneous introduction of Lois and Superman marked a significant milestone in shaping comic book dynamics. For each hero, there needs to be a Lois Lane – a character who consistently outshines them and keeps audiences captivated. Many characters owe their existence to Lois, and she truly deserves another solo series as a testament to her importance.

7) Jason Todd (Alongside Killer Croc in Batman #357)

Back in the day, I stumbled upon a comic book that left quite an impression on me – it was the very same issue where Jason Todd, the infamous Robin with the red hair, and Killer Croc, the terrifyingly menacing villain with blonde hair, made their debut. Frankly, they didn’t have much screen time to begin with; Croc was shrouded in darkness, while Jason only appeared in a single panel. However, for any Batman enthusiast, this issue is nothing short of monumental! After all, it introduced not just one but two iconic characters: the sworn enemy who gives me the chills and the Robin whose death sparked controversy among fans.

As a fan, it’s truly exciting to witness the developments in Jason Todd’s career. Even though he’s still young, not Robin, but merely a kid, it’s still awe-inspiring. And let me tell you, 2025 looks like it could be “Jason Todd’s Year.” Apart from “H2SH,” the news about his new solo series and a sequel to Jeff Lemire’s Robin & Batman is nothing short of incredible. I sincerely hope he gets the recognition he deserves and gets a chance to shine brighter than ever before.
