A previously overlooked Legend of Zelda game from the 1990s is rumored to be making a comeback this year on the Nintendo Switch 2. While the series began in 1986, many spin-off titles have been released alongside the main Legend of Zelda adventures. Often, these side games weren’t as impactful and have faded from memory over time. One particularly obscure title came out in 1997, just before The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – widely considered the most beloved and memorable game in the series – launched for the N64.
According to Nintendo insider Nash Weedle, a new report suggests that The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year, likely through the Nintendo Switch Online service. This Legend of Zelda game isn’t well known, and many players haven’t heard of it.
A Forgotten Legend of Zelda Game
Released in Japan in 1997, The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets was a unique title distributed through the Satellaview service on the Super Nintendo. Because of this unusual release method, it wasn’t sold in stores and remains the most difficult Zelda game to find. While other Zelda titles like Four Swords and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon have been somewhat rare, Ancient Stone Tablets is in a class of its own when it comes to obscurity.
It’s puzzling why Nintendo would release this older game on the Switch 2 in 2026, considering most future owners likely haven’t heard of it. A more logical approach would be to add it to the Nintendo Switch Online service, perhaps alongside the Satellaview, though that would still be unexpected. Recent reports suggested the next console for Nintendo Switch Online would be the Nintendo DS, but adding the Satellaview would be different – it wasn’t a traditional console – so this likely isn’t related to a DS release.
