Former Assassin’s Creed Franchise Head Reveals Why he Left Ubisoft

So, it’s official – I’m leaving Ubisoft. It was confirmed earlier this week, but I wanted to share a bit more about why. Basically, Ubisoft asked me to step down as head of the *Assassin’s Creed* franchise. I wrote a longer post on LinkedIn explaining everything, but that’s the gist of it.

In a recent post, Côté explained that he wasn’t chosen to continue leading the *Assassin’s Creed* franchise. The company wanted someone who better fit the new direction they were taking with Vantage Studios. While Côté was offered a different role, he felt it didn’t offer the same opportunities or allow him to continue his previous work.

I’ve seen a lot of people surprised that I’m leaving *Assassin’s Creed* after being with it for so long, especially since I still really love the game. But honestly, it wasn’t my decision. I didn’t choose to leave.

Ubisoft chose to put someone new in charge of the *Assassin’s Creed* series, aligning with their recent company reorganization. They offered me a different role, but it wasn’t as significant or didn’t allow me to continue the work I’d been leading for the past several years.

Côté also added that he doesn’t hold any ill will towards Ubisoft after leaving. He speaks very positively about his time there, describing the company as his professional home for his entire career.

He stated he doesn’t harbor any ill feelings. He explained that Ubisoft has been his professional home throughout his career, and he’s deeply thankful for the people he’s worked with, the projects he’s been a part of, and the shared belief in creating inspiring worlds for millions.

The news of Côté leaving Vantage Studios came out earlier this week. According to a co-CEO, Côté left because his vision for the studio’s development didn’t align with the company’s plans. Ubisoft also released a statement thanking Côté for his work on the *Assassin’s Creed* series over the years.

A Ubisoft spokesperson announced that Marc-Alexis Côté is leaving the company after the restructuring planned for March 2025. They expressed sadness at his departure but are confident the team will continue to build on the work he accomplished.

We’re incredibly thankful for Marc-Alexis’s contributions, especially his work in building the *Assassin’s Creed* series into the beloved franchise it is today. He’s been a creative and dedicated leader, and his impact will be felt by both our team and our players for years to come. We sincerely appreciate everything he’s done and wish him all the best in the future.

Côté began his career at Ubisoft in 2005, initially contributing to *Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands*. He later became heavily involved with the *Assassin’s Creed* series, even directing *Assassin’s Creed 3*. He then served as a senior producer on *Assassin’s Creed Odyssey* before leading the development of the Animus Hub.
