Mark Darrah, a former producer at Bioware, recently explained why Mass Effect: Andromeda didn’t get the DLC exploring the Quarian Ark as originally planned. His remarks provide insights into some backstage theories that fans have been pondering for years, as the 2017 BioWare game seemed to lack the continued development many players felt it deserved.
Andromeda was due to circumstances beyond the team’s power.

As a passionate fan, I’ve noticed that some fellow enthusiasts have speculated Darrah’s comments could be alluding to pressure from our beloved game’s publisher, Electronic Arts (EA), perhaps hinting at creative constraints or industry expectations.
User Liger agreed, stating, “Absolutely, that makes sense.” Liger had long assumed that Electronic Arts made the choice to exclude the Quarian DLC. He was disappointed because he believed the quest to retrieve the final Ark and confronting whatever hindered them from reaching the rendezvous would have made for a compelling storyline.
For quite some time, “Mass Effect: Andromeda” served as a conclusion to the series, following its perceived failure and BioWare shifting focus towards creating “Anthem.” Many supporters argued that the game was hastily released and not fully polished. One frequent point of contention among fans is the abrupt termination of single-player content updates for the game, along with BioWare abandoning plans to delve into the Quarian Ark through DLC.
It appears Darrah’s recent statements support a viewpoint among fans that Electronic Arts (EA) played a role in BioWare’s struggles, as they provided more information suggesting it wasn’t solely BioWare’s choice to abandon Mass Effect: Andromeda and focus on Anthem instead. EA purchased BioWare in 2007, giving them ownership of the company and its various game intellectual properties.
As a longtime fan, I once held BioWare in high regard, almost as if they were divine game creators, thanks to their earlier projects. However, my perception and appreciation for them have noticeably diminished due to how they managed the Mass Effect series and Anthem.
2020 saw BioWare confirming the resumption of work on the Mass Effect franchise, yet since then, we haven’t seen much progress. It is believed that the production for what could be Mass Effect 5 is still ongoing, five years later, with rumors hinting at a possible release date not before 2028 or even later.
Previously this year, BioWare announced their primary focus has shifted towards the development of the game. However, in a recent update posted by the general manager, Gary McKay, it was stated that the project’s advancement does not necessitate involvement from the entire studio at this point.
