Critics, including beloved series alum Peter Davison, have found the most recent season of Doctor Who less engaging, citing significant plot holes as a main concern.
The actor known for portraying the Fifth Doctor (from 1982 to 1984) has expressed concern that today’s sci-fi productions, including the show and contemporary movies, often emphasize non-stop action at the expense of story development.
On The Lewis Nicholls Show, he pointed out that with advancements in special effects, there’s a risk they might overshadow the overall focus of the production.
Comparing contemporary Doctor Who to today’s superhero films, he commented: “Nowadays, there’s a concern that viewers have short attention spans. They seem to think that if an event isn’t unfolding every couple of minutes, people will switch off, but I don’t think this is accurate.
He admired contemporary detective series and police dramas for maintaining audience interest through a more measured pace, but commented: “It seems that in sci-fi productions, there’s an urge to move at breakneck speed which, from my perspective, makes it feel more like a movie preview than actual television.

The storyline has significant missing pieces as it quickly moves from one part to another, leaving it up to your imagination to piece together the unspoken details.
It seems possible if you’re young and in good health, but I’m not certain. To me, it appears as if you’re getting a sneak peek into an exciting adventure you might want to experience sometime in the future, much like watching a Doctor Who preview.
On the contrary, Davison didn’t just express criticism towards modern Doctor Who; he also commended its showrunner, Russell T Davies, who revitalized it in 2005, for addressing some of the challenges that the original series encountered, notably the characterization of the companion role.

Davison fondly noted that Billie Piper’s character, Rose Tyler, stood out as exceptional. He reminisced that in the past, there were frequent criticisms about classic characters not having enough screen time, whereas contemporary characters like Rose have more significant roles.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the shocking turn of events that marked the end of Ncuti Gatwa’s era in our favorite show – when his character regenerated into Piper. It left me utterly amazed!
It’s worth mentioning that Piper was not referred to as “The Doctor” in the credits, leaving viewers curious about what character she might play instead.
He shared with Starburst magazine that he’s unsure about what Billie Piper is up to because he’s merely heard of it without understanding the context. To him, it seems like an utterly bizarre concept.
I have my doubts about her being the Doctor. I believe it was more a surprise twist in the last episode meant to shock viewers, like ‘Wow, what’s going on here?’ And then it seemed like they were saying, ‘Leave her alone.’
He mentioned: “I found her an excellent partner, yet her career is thriving, and there are numerous opportunities coming her way. It’s hard for me to understand why she might decide to spend a year in Cardiff on her own accord.
