As a long-time Doctor Who fan, I found Robert Shearman – who used to write for the show – recently shared some pretty surprising ideas about where the series could go next. It’s definitely something that’s got fans talking!
You know, I was chatting with Mark Shearman recently, and he really gets what it’s like to be a Doctor Who fan. He described how he feels about the show in phases – sometimes he’s totally into it, and other times he needs a break. It’s like a real love-hate relationship, a constant push and pull!
Right now, I’m trying to revive the show, but it’s difficult because it’s never been less popular.
He explained that after 1989, they had a working Doctor for quite some time. Now, anything new related to Doctor Who will inevitably feel like a step back. At least with the novels released after the TV show, you felt like you were still following the current Doctor – either McCoy or McGann.
It’s unlikely we’ll see novels exploring a Doctor played by Billie Piper, simply because it’s a concept most people wouldn’t understand. The ending of ‘The Reality War’ felt very definitive, providing a clear conclusion – something we hadn’t really had before.

Shearman is most famous for writing the 2005 Doctor Who episode ‘Dalek,’ featuring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper.
Viewers are eagerly awaiting news about whether the show will continue and when new episodes might air. Apparently, writer Russell T Davies wasn’t thrilled with the finale’s choice to feature Billie Piper and hint at her potentially becoming the next Doctor.
The fifteenth season ended with Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transforming into a new Doctor played by Billie Piper, who previously starred as Rose Tyler, a companion to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. This unexpected choice has generated a lot of excitement and discussion among fans and actors from the show’s history. Colin Baker, who played the Sixth Doctor, jokingly dismissed the idea, saying he thought it was ‘a load of old malarky’.
Russell T Davies, the showrunner, stated last September that a decision about the show’s continuation would be made after Season 2 aired, and that this was the planned approach all along.
As a huge Doctor Who fan, I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter about whether we’ll *get* a Season 3. It’s understandable, since they haven’t officially announced it yet! But the BBC has said they’re waiting to see how Season 2 performs before making any decisions. So all the rumors floating around? Just that – rumors. They’re sticking to their guns and saying they’ll let Season 2 air first.
We originally made a deal with Disney Plus for 26 episodes, and we still have a whole spin-off series, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ that hasn’t been released yet.
The upcoming Doctor Who spin-off is scheduled for next year and will center around UNIT as they deal with a worldwide crisis while the Doctor is unavailable.
According to the BBC, a terrifying, ancient species rises from the ocean, announcing its presence to the world and causing a global crisis. As humanity faces extinction, UNIT – a military organization – takes charge to fight back in a war that spans both land and sea.
