Former Editor Slams Dragon Ball Super Artist: “The Basics Aren’t Up To Par”

Dragon Ball Super is a fan favorite, but production paused after the passing of its creator, Akira Toriyama. While Toriyama wrote the story, Toyotarou was the artist and is now leading the series. Recently, former editor Kazuhiko Torishima surprisingly criticized Toyotarou in an interview with Yubo and Mashirito’s KosoKoso Broadcasting Station (shared on YouTube), stating that Toyotarou and another artist, Shibata, need to improve their fundamental skills.

He explained that the manga editor doesn’t grasp the story’s structure, how the artwork directs the reader’s eye, or how the panel angles affect the flow of information. Because of this, they can’t properly review the finished artwork and simply see it as a standard manga.

A recent comment from Toyotarou, who worked with the late Akira Toriyama for years, caused a stir online. The original interview was in Japanese, but a subtitled clip was shared by @BorutoRiden. In the same interview, Torishima also sharply criticized the new *Dragon Ball Daima* anime, which upset many fans, given it’s considered Toriyama’s final project. However, Torishima is known for being critical of various popular series, including *One Piece*, *Attack on Titan*, and *Demon Slayer*, in addition to *Dragon Ball*.

What’s Next For the Dragon Ball Franchise?

The story of *Dragon Ball Super* begins a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu in *Dragon Ball Z* (before the series’ final events), and introduces new, powerful enemies just as Earth finds peace. The series has evolved a lot over time, and fans are eager to see what happens next with Goku. The manga briefly returned in February 2024 with a single chapter before going on another break. The anime ran from July 2015 to March 2018, producing 131 episodes that covered roughly 42 chapters of the manga. Since then, both the anime and manga have taken different paths, and it’s currently unknown when more content will be released.

The future of the *Dragon Ball* series is uncertain following the passing of Akira Toriyama, with his recent work on Daima being his last. Fans enjoyed this installment because it emphasized exciting adventures over constant fighting. It also brought back beloved transformations like Super Saiyan 3 and 4, officially making them part of the main story after they were previously excluded from the *Dragon Ball GT* series.

The ending of *Dragon Ball Daima* hints at future adventures, giving fans hope that Toei will keep making new *Dragon Ball* stories. Even though *Daima* was planned as a single season, it still leaves some questions unanswered. Toei has created several non-canon *Dragon Ball* series before, often with input from Akira Toriyama, and these have generally been popular with fans.
