Xbox Game Pass Ultimate recently became more expensive with a 50% price increase, but Microsoft partnered with Epic Games to help ease the impact for certain users.
Fortnite remains a hugely popular game, known for its exciting battle royale matches that are easy to pick up and play. It’s also famous for featuring a wide variety of characters and collaborations with other brands.
The newest Fortnite update brings Springfield, the town from The Simpsons, to life within the game. This is thanks to a collaboration between Epic Games and Disney.
Microsoft recently added some great benefits for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members. Now, a Fortnite Crew subscription is included with Game Pass Ultimate, giving players extra in-game items and V-Bucks each month. Plus, Fortnite is now part of Xbox Play Anywhere on PC, so players can launch and play the game directly from the Xbox app on Windows 11 without needing the Epic Games Launcher.
Fortnite players on Xbox PC are currently experiencing issues because the game files aren’t downloading properly. This is probably due to a late update causing a conflict between the game’s different versions. While it *should* be working, many users are facing problems right now.
According to information from the Microsoft Store, the problem is with Epic Games, and they’re working on a solution that should be available within the next day or two. Once the fix is released, players who downloaded the incorrect version will be able to download the complete game.

This outage keeps drawing attention to ongoing problems with the Microsoft Store as a way to get games. The fact that this could happen reveals deeper, long-standing issues with the Store as a gaming platform. I’ve spoken with many developers who want to see improvements to the Xbox PC system, and Microsoft has been releasing updates to its development kit and publishing rules to address those concerns.
Microsoft has been working hard to make things better. The Microsoft Store has seen massive improvements thanks to the work of Rudy Huhn, a well-known figure from the Windows Phone era. However, the PC store for Xbox still needs a lot of work, especially since it’s the first thing users will see on the next Xbox. The Xbox handheld is essentially a testing ground for the next-generation console, so these kinds of issues are concerning.
The fact that games like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite already work well on Xbox PCs is a good sign for Microsoft’s plan to create its own game platform within Windows – similar to Steam. While it currently lacks strong support from smaller developers, has a somewhat awkward user experience, and makes it hard to find new games, these issues could likely be fixed with future updates.
Microsoft is competing with Valve’s SteamOS, which already has a strong foundation of tools, social features, and support for both developers and users – though it has faced some issues with anti-cheat software. While devices similar to the Steam Machine might not easily run all popular PC games, the vast library of high-quality indie games available on Steam more than compensates, especially for dedicated PC gamers that Microsoft is targeting.
It looks like the problems with Fortnite on Xbox PC will be resolved quickly. Most games work perfectly on Xbox PC right away, but it’s unfortunate that so many new users are experiencing this issue with Fortnite as their first experience.
