Fox Animated Series Director Confirms Their Show Has Been Canceled

Fox Animation is known for its popular animated shows geared towards adults. Programs like The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, and Bob’s Burgers have significantly boosted Fox’s Animation Domination in recent years. These four shows have been so successful that the network has already renewed them for several more seasons. However, not all of Fox’s animated series are so lucky, as a quietly announced cancellation has come for one show that many fans enjoyed.

The Great North director Aimee Steinberger has announced the show’s cancellation. The series, which premiered in 2021 and was set in Alaska, featured an animation style reminiscent of Bob’s Burgers, but told a different story than the Belchers’. Steinberger shared the disappointing news with fans on BlueSky, saying, “Sadly, we received confirmation today that The Great North is officially cancelled. I’m really upset about it. It’s one of the few shows I’ve been involved with that I truly enjoyed, and I especially appreciated the incredibly talented team I worked with. I’m grateful to have been a part of it. In a landscape often filled with cynical and harsh content, The Great North offered something different-a family that genuinely loves and supports one another. I hope to work on more shows centered around that kind of dynamic-whether it’s a biological family or a chosen one.”

Will The Great North Return?

After the news about the show being cancelled, I saw Steinberger responding to fans and they didn’t seem to want to rule out a return for the Tobin family. When someone asked if the series could come back, Aimee said, “It’s always possible! Futurama came back like three times.” Even though Steinberger was definitely upset about losing the Fox animated series, they were also pleased to think about everything they’d achieved, mentioning in a BlueSky thread, “Five seasons is definitely respectable, especially in the past few years’ economy.”

If you’re curious about how the series concluded after airing its ninety-seventh and final episode on September 14th, the ending was both heartwarming and a little sad. The show’s main character, Beef Tobin, portrayed by Parks & Rec’s Nick Offerman, is selected by the town to retrieve a moose to start a community-wide celebration. Although he faces several challenges during this task, he eventually succeeds with help from the people of Lone Moose. In the final scene, Beef looks up at the stars and once again shares his affection for the “Great North,” echoing the beginning of the animated series. While this marks the end of The Great North, the season five finale was a fitting conclusion that celebrated the entire series and brought the Tobin family’s story to a satisfying close.
