Fox Officially Cancels Long-Running Animated Series

For years, Fox’s Animation Domination has been *the* destination for animation lovers who enjoy the network’s funny shows. The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, and American Dad have consistently been the mainstays of the block, but there was another series that really earned its place among these popular titles. Just earlier this week, I heard from a director working on a big Fox show that their series was getting canceled, though there hadn’t been an official announcement yet. Sadly, those fears have now been confirmed, as Fox has just released a statement officially confirming the show’s end.

The Great North has been canceled by Fox. Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, announced the news, saying, “We’re so grateful for everything Wendy, Lizzie, Loren, and the amazing cast and crew put into The Great North. It’s difficult to say goodbye, but we’re thankful for the five hilarious seasons ‘The Great North’ brought to the iconic Animation Domination lineup.” The last episode aired on September 14th; it was originally intended as the season five finale, but now serves as the show’s final episode. Interestingly, that recent finale worked well as a series finale because it looked back on some of the key moments from the beginning of the show.

Say Goodbye To The North

As we previously discussed, The Great North director Aimee Steinberger announced the disappointing news this week on her social media. Although not an official announcement from Fox, it was evident that the show, along with Beef and his family, was coming to an end. Steinberger shared the following message: “Today we received the news that The Great North is officially cancelled. I’m really upset about it. It’s one of the few shows I’ve truly enjoyed working on, and I especially loved the incredibly talented team. I feel fortunate to have been a part of it. In a television landscape often filled with negativity, The Great North stood out. The family always showed love and support for each other, and I hope to work on more shows with that kind of positive dynamic – whether it’s a biological family or a chosen one.”

Even though The Great North has finished airing, you can still enjoy the show whenever you want on Hulu-or discover it if you haven’t seen it yet. The series, which first premiered in 2021, centered on a father in Alaska and his journey raising his four kids. With an animation style reminiscent of Bob’s Burgers, the show didn’t quite reach the popularity of classics like The Simpsons and/or Family Guy, but lasting for five seasons shows it definitely connected with an audience. Though its cancellation is disappointing, the continued success of The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, and American Dad indicates that Fox remains committed to animated programming for the foreseeable future.
