Netflix and the creators of Stranger Things are going all out for the show’s fifth and final season, and that includes bringing in some well-known directors. Frank Darabont, famous for directing The Shawshank Redemption, will be directing two episodes. He recently told ComicBook that working on Stranger Things has been the most enjoyable experience of his directing career.
Darabont described the experience as incredibly enjoyable, saying he had more fun directing these episodes than any others in his career. Despite the challenges – long nights and a lot to manage – he really appreciated working with the Duffer brothers, whom he considers brilliant storytellers who put a lot of heart into their show.
Darabont also spoke highly of the cast and crew, even though he hadn’t assembled the team himself beforehand. He expressed great affection for all the actors and described the crew as top-notch, praising everyone from the cinematographer and assistant director to the grips and gaffers. He said the entire team worked together beautifully, like a perfectly tuned machine.
Darabont explained that he didn’t have the usual control over casting for this project. Typically, a director chooses their own team, but in this case, he simply arrived hoping the actors would be competent and skilled. He was pleasantly surprised, saying they exceeded his expectations and were truly excellent.
Frank Darabont has a strong background in filmmaking, with notable credits like The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Majestic, and The Mist. He’s also worked extensively in television, including shows like The Shield and The Walking Dead. For the fifth season of Stranger Things, Darabont directed episodes 3, titled “The Turnbow Trap,” and episode 5, titled “Shock Jock.”
Frank Darabont hadn’t directed anything since 2013’s Mob City, where he directed four episodes. Getting him to direct multiple episodes for this new project, and ensuring he enjoyed the experience, was a big win for the Duffer Brothers and Netflix, and that positive energy should be visible in the final product.
The fifth season of Stranger Things will be released in two parts. The first four episodes of Volume 1 come out on November 26th, followed by the three episodes of Volume 2 on Christmas. The final episode will premiere on New Year’s Eve. Both volumes will be available starting at 5 PM Pacific Time.
